I wanna chainsaw on a stick

I have the Remington Electric model and have cleaned up two acres right around my place with it and have had no problems at all. I put the 4Kw generator in the back of the pickup and drive to the work area. I also have stood in the back of the bed to get that extra 3' of height. If you get any motorized pole saw get some saftey glasses or goggles. You can work around a tree so fast that you forget about windage and get a face full of chips /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif. A "Swamper" is a good idea too. He will keep you moving so you won't be walking through your work. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I have the cheap remington 10" elect saw - The wife & I trim like crazy - I ride in the cage I built for the bucket, wife drives, and the generator sits on the carry-all on the 3 point. I like the elect for working high because of the control of the chain drive it has. Trigger off and the chain stops immediately.

I bought a combination string trimmer/brush cutter/chainsaw from Home Depot. Not sure who actually makes it, but it carries the John Deere name (this was before I bought my <font color="blue"> TC18 </font> ) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's a straight-stick string trimmer, and the string head comes off easily to install the chainsaw head. I also bought an extension for the chainsaw that will allow me to reach up about 6-7' above my shoulders, for a total reach of about 10-12', without even standing in the bucket. The chainsaw is only about 8-10" long (I can't remember all the dimensions and the unit is 45 miles away at my property), but does a great ob of trimming. I think the total was less than $200 for all the stuff, maybe a little more. It's also one of the better gas string trimmers I've had, and the 3-blade metal cutting wheel works well. I think there is also a blower attachment available for it. Recommended.

I have the extendable Echo with an additional 6 foot extension, the combination allows me to get at branches 22 feet up. It has more than paid for itself in convenience and safety. Tree climbing or use of a rope saw just doesn't do the job. I purchased it after I had cleared 60 trees blown over in a major storm. A few were uprooted, the majority were broken off 20 feet up and hung on other trees. I had to go up using tree climbing gafts and cut each of them loose. If I had the pole pruner then, I could have safely completed the effort in half the time. Aborists were getting $500. per tree to clear the damage. The pole pruner, with extension, was equal to one and a half trees done by an arborist.

You won't go wrong with Stihl

I used the big echo/stihl units. They are great, but tiring. I didn't think the weed eater attach kind would be any good. But I ended up with a Tanaka attach that fit my Maruyama weed eater. It will fit many top brands. It really does a great job, and isn't all that heavy. It gives about 9' reach, and cost $189. Grainger sells it.

I was re-reading this post to see what everyone else uses when I rememberd and amazing thing I saw in New Zealand.

Out in the country on the South Island the farmers prune there pine trees into giant hedges. Imagine mature trees a hundred plus feet tall in a row all cut square. Some of these giant hedges, or wind blocks, are a thousand feet long. It must have taken a hundred years for them to mature and fill out as they have.

I didn't see them actually trimming the trees, but I did see the machine they use. It looked like a crane of sorts with a ten foot table saw blade at the end.

I've had one of the Stihls for several years now. I find it handy for trimming the trees around the pastures. The extreme length does give you a workout. For some reason the shoulder strap makes it awkward to use so I usually leave that off which contributes to the workout.

It also works well for reaching limbs hanging over the creek or dropoffs.

I had the Remington. It's a good saw but it's not very drop resistant. I cut off a 6" or so limb and got caught up while trying to move out of the way. I had to chuck the saw and it cracked. We managed to get another year out of it before it just fell apart. One thing to think about when using a pole saw. Those limbs can land on you. The time I had to chuck the saw the limb caught me on the hand and took out a few healthy chunks of meat. Eye protection is an absolute necessity.
