But, I was reading another synthetic oil thread on this website, and the consensus was dino oil is just as good as protecting your motor, synthetics give you better start up protection in cold weather and longer change intervals.
So, I could get wishy washy here and just stay with good old dino oil))))))))))))))))))))))

An oil lab's test data covers all of the above with the test results. So to me, the only advantage to synthetic is longer oil changes and it costs a lot more to get to that point. This said, I use synthetics and change gasoline engine oil every 5k miles or so (not cost effective) and every 50 hours on my tractor using regular petroleum.

For what it's worth, my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee, AWD, 170k miles, 5.2L engine, auto. trans., heavy winch bumper/winch, carrying a moderate-heavy load every time I drive it, still gets the same 16 MPG it did when I purchased it with 16k miles on the odometer.

I change my tractor oil every fall after the mowing season, I average between 100 to 150 hrs per year. I use Amsoil 10W30 small engine oil in my tractors & Amsoil 10W30 in all my vehicles.

Yeah. I think oil is oil until one needs something at the extreme ends of things.

This comes right out of the no $h! T sherlock files. You cant test a 0w-40 full synthetic and be suprised when a semi synthetic 10w-40 - or 15W40 out performs it in a wear test your testing bassed on viscosity. Allmost all the low ranked synthetic oils were lower weight.

They should have done a fair comparison on same weight oils. This would have narrowed the variation down and provided a better result. Their is a lot more to oil then just a simple wear test.

If they had tested cheap 0w-40 semi synthetics versus 10w-40 mobil one results would have been flip floped.

The main reason for the OEMs going to lower weight oils was not for durability but because of the E.P.A in there never ending quest to make stuff more expensive and make the tree huggers happy by forcing increased fuel economy.

10w-30 will lubricate your machine just fine. 5w-40 likely provides a broader range, but I've run both in my Kubota and haven't seen any detectable difference in start up, etc, even in subzero weather. I'm a fan of changing oil annually to get the dirt/acids out, not because I necessarily believe the oil itself is worn out, be it dino, semi, or full syn. I also like a quality filter.

Then, I use the machine, check the dipstick for any unexpected use and when night comes, I sleep like a baby.

go ahead and switch , be happy with your choice:thumbsup: ... 0W40 , 5W30, 15w40, etc any of them will work very well

think of it this way ,,,, the lower the first number makes it easier for cold starts , the higher the second number allows for higher summer temps ....

( yes , higher second numbers loosen up the clearances a bit , but negligible on a new engine )
