Those small antique jumping jack tampers are fun but scary to watch. I can never figure out if it's the jaw or the toes they're supposed to destroy.

I have used an old jumping jack and not a thing about it was fun. It was hard to start, heavy (of course), if you hit something hard you better look out.

I used to operate a P&H 215 for poured basement wall companies setting crane forms. One winter back in 73-74 I used one to dig about half a pond for a friend with a dragline bucket. Most boring job you could have. Your digging under water, so you can't see what you're digging. You have to keep moving over slightly or you end up with a trench. It was something to do, that big recession, because of OPEC and I was out of work.

We always tied a rag on the hoist cable that would give us the proper depth when it was at the surface.
