Glock 17

I'm also a 9mm fan.
Another vote for a Glock, but I'd go for the more compact 19 rather then the 17.
But Glocks aren't really the best choice for the novice. The polymer frame that makes it so robust can also be "limpwristed" which can result in stovepipes or misfeeds. The Glocks do not have an external safety, if that matters.
BTW, if you do go for a Glock...leave the trigger alone!!!!

For the guy that, admittedly, knows "which end of the gun to point where to ensure that I have a fighting chance"...that's a guy probably better off with a revolver. If you go for a revolver, take a look at the Ruger SP101 in .357 Magnum.

You can get CZ75, they make it in 9mm Luger.

Don't let anyone talk you out of a nine. It is a perfect ammo and will do what you need it to do and that is protect you and your family. As to your question, I carry a Glock 26 during cooler climate. (More clothes to conceal with) And I carry a Ruger LCP in warmer weather. The LCP is a .380, and thank God too. I was waiting for someone to come out with a 9mm pocket pistol and couldn't wait any longer. I read that any pocket pistol could have a missfeed within the first 200 rounds, so I bought my LCP and immediately put 200 through it. My hand hurt for days.:D But, great gun for size. I do recommend the Crimson laser on the trigger guard though as the fixed sights suck in low light.

Try Kahr K9 or P9 if weight is a concern, which it may be for a backpack situation, Glock 19 is a little easier to shoot, a 17 even better. Of course the 357/45 guys are right about stopping power. but if 2 legged is main concern, some good +P hollow point ammo will keep em off of you. In my opinion a Glock 19 would be a good compromise between weight and shootability. I have all of the guns mentioned except the 17 but have shoot many of them. Smaller handguns are harder to hit with, but generally weigh less and easier to pack. Like everything in life there is a trade off. There you go..

Not sure why some people forget the world has evolved and still carry revolvers

Very simple. We prefer reliability over number of rounds the gun will hold. But yes, the flush-a-matics are becoming more reliable all the time. So far my Sig Sauer P229DAK has not malfunctioned and I like shooting it. But I still carry my old S&W Chief.;)

Nicely said, Bird:thumbsup:

Revolvers are simple, easy to check loaded/unloaded, there is not much that could go wrong with it.

But what do I know, my only auto pistol is SW22A, I am ashamed to admit I don't even have a CZ:(

Here are my .02 on the subject...there will always be a debate over the caliber and, as I am seeing, pistol vs. revolver, so I won't go too deep into that. The simple answer, IMHO, is get what is comfortable FOR YOU. Go to the local gun store and hold several sizes and brands. An ultra concealable gun generally (for me anyway) doesn't feel great in the hand, the grip is small and its just not built for comfort. Conversely a full size might feel good your hand but its not as easy to conceal. Consider what you want to do with it and where you want to take it and go from there.

If you can, shoot a few of them too. Revolvers are great and as mentioned, very simple and reliable but they have a greater felt recoil. Same goes for different calibers, again, go with what is comfortable FOR YOU and don't worry too much about what others say. Everyone is different.

That said, I carry Glocks on and off duty and love them. Very simple, very reliable and high capacity. I don't care what anyone says, I want all the rounds I can get in one place. I would rather have them and not need them then need them and not have them. For off duty carry I don't like to carry extra mags on my person so its nice to walk out of the house with no less than 11 rounds ready to go. I like the compact version of the Glocks for day to day carry (I think its the 19 in the 9mm), pretty easy to conceal but still big enough to get a good grip on.

Good luck and be safe!

Very simple. We prefer reliability over number of rounds the gun will hold.

And accuracy. My 686 has adjustable sights and a 6" barrel. I have it dialled in for target shooting. At 25 yards, I can print 6 rounds in a 6" circle freehand, shooting single action. From a rest, I can do that well at 50 yards. If you are going to take your shootouts out of the bar and into a rural setting, being able to hit something 50 yards away is a real plus. Except by accident, I have never even pointed a gun at a human being, but I have shot many pop cans, fence posts, and the occasional animal.

I think autoloaders are an urban phenomenon, where the primary purpose of a gun is for shooting other people. In the country, a gun is just a tool, like a shovel or an axe.
