Ice Fishing \"West Virginia Style\"

Here are some photos of snaring last winter. Thought some of you may enjoy seeing how this is done. There are drivers pounding the ice toward the guys looking through the holes that snare the fish as the pass under. This is allot of fun.

They are yellow and white suckers. I assume by "Redhorse" that you mean carp. Yes, there are carp in these rivers. Last year, we had a truck bed full them. Also, a little liquid courage is required when the ice gets thin and starts sinking. It gives you a "Rush". Redhorse are getting rare in Indiana. The golden sucker is most common and is a big sport fish in the late winter/early spring when they run up stream to spawn. When the water is cold, the meat is very firm and sweet. As the water gets warmer, the meat becomes less firm and sweet.

Unfortunately, there is an advisory out about eating bottom feeders such as these. They accumulate many toxins. The larger they get, the more toxins, etc...

You guys are nuts. Just my types. Next time you try another off-the-wall, and seemingly very cold, "fish-hunting" trip like that, let me know and I'll drive up from South Carolina. If I hadn't seen the pictures, I wouldn't have believed it. But, it makes sense - who came up with the idea??
As to pollution and the like - sure - but I expect the idea was to have a social outing, and a bit of exercise, on an otherwise boring weekend - heck, throw another "mad cow" steak on the grill, and just "catch and release" the fish (that's what I do anyway, being a fly fisherman of very modest talent, meaning I don't catch much anyway).
