Cut the top half off of a trailer ball, then cut the shank off the other half? Should be easy with a chop saw. Wouldn't be a perfect dome, but should be adequate for what you need, and plenty strong.

Mike I wrote exactly that then deleted it :D thinking - by the time you figure out how to clamp a trailer ball in a flimsy chopsaw vise, then make 2 cuts - you'd be done with the orange peel method. Everybody changing out to 2" should have some extra 1 7/8" around, right?

Shield that's awesome you were able to post up a diagram of the method (and in paper). That would be really easy to cut with an angle grinder. And IMHO, easy to fill in with a MIG.

I cut a circle piece the size of the pipe of any flat stock i have. Weld it on and round off with grinder. Finish with a flap wheel. It looks great.
