Ideas for storing fasteners?

Someone here a few months ago showed a parts organizer that was a genius design.
It was on casters, top like Formica that had a square hole cut in top left. Below countertop was space for maybe 60 bins. Storage bins were shoebox size. So you pull out bin, dump on the top. Slide bin in below hole. After finding what you want just slide hardware over to hole, they fall back into bin.

I thought the litter buckets were the best part about having cats.

What gets me is that if you try to buy empty containers they're often more expensive than buying containers filled with something. And not as useful.

Even better - I don't have cats, my son & wife & 2.9 children have two cats and I get a good supply of litter buckets.

That gives me an idea: one of my workbenches has an old door for its top. It has a hole where the doorknob went. That could be my parts-sorting hole!

One thing I find invaluable is a parts sorting tray I picked up at Harbor Freight for three bucks:
Easy Sorter Funnel Tray

Dump a container of parts into it, pick out the ones you want, dump them back into the container.

Nice idea, but 60 shoeboxes would be a considerable sized cabinet. I could see it on a smaller scale though.
