If you have Hughesnet.....Have you been put on notice?

My Gen 4 is 20Gb a month w/2GB bonus(that kicks in if you run out), & the bonus Free time(unlimited) is 2AM-11AM every day with the total bill being $111 a month. So far it works pretty good but still not as fast as fiber optic or DSL...I'm happy since it the only game in these sticks I live in. They are stringing fiber optic cable on the far side of the county, but I bet it will be two more years before we see it...about the time my Hughesnet contract is up.

And no I have not ever been contacted by Hughesnet about any planned outages.

Motor- From what I'm reading around on line, there is no "Free time" during the overnight hours on Gen 4 like there was on the old system. The representative on the phone also said it is not offered.

That is not correct at least for me on the top tier plan. It says this on my HT1000 System Control Page:

"Bonus Bytes is used between the hours of 2AM and 11AM local time (Bonus Period) - Unlimited"

And we have watched instant movies for hours at a time during this "Bonus Period" & have not used any GB's.

Here is the whole page:

Data Allowance Status
AnyTime
Data Allowance Status OK
Data Allowance Remaining 21.5 GB

AnyTime Data Allowance 20.0 GB
AnyTime Data Allowance Remaining 19.4 GB
Bonus Bytes Unlimited
Bonus Bytes Remaining Unlimited
Token Bytes Available 2.0 GB

Allowance Resets in 26 days, 9 hr and 35 min
Bonus Period Starts in 11 hr, 34 min

20.0 GB
AnyTime Bonus
Bytes

19.4 GB
Remain Unlimited

10.0 GB

On copy & paste it does not load in order because of the GB graph chart, & really says "Bonus Bytes Unlimited" over that graph.

I'm being pounded by HughesNet to upgrade (I think the current Hughes "bird" is dying). Verizon has a tower 3 miles away and we have been very happy with our Verizon cell-phone service.

Quite frankly we are getting tired of having to scrape any bit of snow/ice off that Hughes dish because it was placed in a spot that worked without getting a chainsaw out but I'm afraid somebody is going to get hurt crawling out that upstairs window. After some long outage periods recently I did call them to see if it was us or them and they told me I had a "pointing error" that would cost $130 to adjust.

So I'm asking about what is involved with a cell modem. Currently Hughes comes into the house to a Motorola cable modem that feeds a Linksys wireless router.

I understand that Gen4 moves to a monthly allowance like the wireless plans do. That is a plus I think since some days we use all, some days we hardly use anything. As far as I can figure out, Hughes still has that overnight download window so that would be a plus.

I read this and laughed. Snow wasn't too much of a problem unless it was the wet sticky kind for us. Wet snow means temps close to 32. Sometimes I would just use the garden hose to was the snow off vs get the ladder out. The GF decided she was going to do the same thing while I was at work. The problem was the temps dropped like a stone and she managed to put a 12" layer of ice on the dish and the walkway below the dish. Spent an hour on a ladder with a heat gun melting ice, lol.

Yesterday I removed Hughes's dish from the house. I still have to replace the siding but that'll wait until warmer temps. Two months ago Dish removed one of my two dishes and installed a new one that get's both sats. The house use to look like an industrial complex with dishes pointing every which way. Now with one that's hard to see the house almost looks naked.

Two years ago I didn't want to pay the $130 so I realigned the dish myself using the signal meter on the modem page. It was easy but it took two people. I was able to get it better than the guy who orginally installed it. I think I'm going to toss the Hughes stuff unless someone wants it.

it is a lot faster and the daily allowance is gone and the monthly allowance is more than you can use.we have one day of the month left and i only used 1/4 of my allowance.i am very pleased with gen4.the old package you were very limited on what you could download.
I have Hughesnet and they sent me e-mails for special offers to upgrade but they haven't said anything about cancelling service if I don't upgrade. Sounds like a scam.
I don't have any plans to get the Gen-4. If they would upgrade for free, maybe I would but I'm not committing to another 2 year contract and have service that's not much faster than I have now.

This is what my screen says as well, but the Hughesnet people told me there is no unlimited time. But it looks like I have it anyway. I'm on the middle plan.

For general browsing it is plenty, but if your household gets into a lot of video downloading, the allowance will disappear quick

You won't believe me but I actually installed my own 10' dish back in the 80's (pre-Dish/Direct TV/internet...a dish that rotated to pick up all the various channels...that took a long time because it had 3 variables). And probably 10 years ago I installed my own upgrade to a Direct TV dish because "rain-fade" was frequent. So I know all about that "pointing" stuff. Our problem with Hughes is a tree line that made them mount it on a section of roof that can only be accessed by crawling out a 2nd story window and I'm afraid somebody is going to get hurt. Lately it doesn't seem to take much kill the service but I'm sure that is a function of the "pointing error" that they want to charge me to fix.

Looking seriously at either the Verizon or US Cell options. A neighbor tested the latter and was amazed at the difference even running 3G service. A 2 year lock but that's true for Hughes Gen4 as well.

Go to Millenicom's web site. They sell internet service through all the major cell companies like Sprint, AT@T, and like I have, Verizon. With my Verizon service through Millenicom I get 20gb a month and although I had to pay for the MiFi unit up front ($100 plus $50 activation) I have no contract. I pay Millenicom $70. If I had gone through Verizon directly it would have been $110 for 20gb of data and $20 a month for the MifI. Verizon sell the MiFi for $50 and $35 to activate it, so the upfront cost is slightly higher but service through Millenicom is about half the price without a contract so you make out.
