If you were buying a new tractor for rolling hay, a new hay roll baler, and a new disc mower what would they be? I'm leaning toward Mahindra 5500 4wd, Vermeer Rebel, and Fort First Choice Disc Mower. Combination sound like a winner? Gonna cost about $36,000.

If I was buying new I'd go with John Deere. With regards to a mower I'd definitely go with a mower conditioner and not just a mower. The Vermeer round baler is nice though if you go that way.

Discbine mower conditioners comprise only 18% of the disc mower units sold in the USA. Why? Likely the first thing is PRICE. The average 6 disc, 8', 3 point disc mower cost $4,000-5,000 and the disc mower conditioner cost average cost is $15,000+. Second disc mower conditioners take larger HP tractors. It's the same way in baler sales, the 5'x4' balers outsell the 6'x5' balers 3-1 for exactly the same reasons. Over 50% of the cattle in the USA are owned by farmers that own less than 100 acres.
We farm over 700 acres of grass hay and have owned many mower conditioners but for the last 10 years we have gone to 3 point disc mowers and using tedders. We use smaller tractors, less expensive machines, use less fuel, and still put the hay up in the same time as if we used a mower conditioner. Mower conditioners are best used in legume crops. The roller type is used mostly in the USA with the flail conditioner being used in Europe, because few leafy crops are used in Europe. The vast majority of producers harvest hay use 40-60 HP tractors. The Disc Mower Conditioners are usually for the producers that have larger tractors and larger acreage production.

I'd bump the Mahindra up to the 6000 or better yet the 6500. The 5500 is on the minimum end,if not underpowered for what you want to do in ideal conditions.

Now I've never cut hay down in Kain Tuck,so the mower without conditioner call I know nothing about.

As for the baler,I've had a Vermeer baler. Good simple machines, makes too tight of a bale though I found.

Just pitch-fork the hay in the barn loose...LOL
Most of the round bales in KY are stored outside and those loose bales are like sponges and have greater crop spoilage before feeding.

Yea I sure wouldn't want to use anything but a mower conditioner for alfalfa. If you use a tedder alot in alfalfa you lose a good percetage of your leaves. It all depends on how good of hay you want to make.

Does anyone use a self propelled mower with a conditioner?
