I am interested too. I was going to buy a snowmobile in Canada a few years ago as the exchange rate was more favorable than now. I was a little daunted by the paperwork so I didn't.

When we go to Ontario every year sledding, I try to credit card as much as I can as you get the best exchange rate on plastic. I keep my receipts for everything else and when we hit the border, I get the GST refunded as I am an American Citizen and I am not liable for that tax.

Hey Yellowsocks,

Certain motor vehicles are different up here than down your way,ie......emmission compliance. Check with the US Customs at point of entry about it.

There were three different pieces of paper that i had to fill out that I got from the DMV. It was very simple. The only catch is the person buying the vehicle has to be the one that takes it across the border. If you send someone else then it is alot more paperwork. I would call your DMV and get the paperwork from them. I then called US and Canadian customs. There was a one page report I had to fill out for Canadian customs and my state DMV paperwork was all I needed for US customs.

Our state had all the forms online. I'm not sure about your state.

Here's the link for my state yellowsocks. I'm not sure if it is different for you or not. Also with regard to emissions it will say right in the vehicle whether it is legal us emissions. The customs people won't know much about that. I had to verify it through the mfg. before I got the vehicle licensed.

Typically when we bring a US car in they make you change the speedo to km/h, change the dash icon from the US "BRAKE" to the Canadian "(O)" that indicates 2 brake shoes on a drum.

There are a few other things they change too, and the convertor has to sign a bunch of paperwork.
