I have been told different opinions on six volt ignition coils one they are one size fits all. the other is they are vehicle specific. barring they way they mount in the vehicle, can one use any six volt coil? I have a 37 Plymouth that needs a new one and i'm unable to locate one for it at this time and want to mount a different one until I find an original

in general.. the round , cylindrical type 6v ignition coils are universal.

On some applications, like fords.. you found square 6v coils. thsoe are really more like 3.5v coils.. so they ran a ballast resistor in line with the 6v coil. Most all other 6v coil setups do not use a ballast resistor.

Also.. many times you will find a 12v car or tractor that uses a 6v coil and a ballast resistor in some sort of bypass ignition fashion.

back to your question... 6v generic coil from napa is fine... for some numbers:

6 volt coil: Borg Warner E1, Napa IC7 etc

this assumes a standard cylindrical coil with a primary in and out to dizzy, and a secondary tower for the KV.
