ignition switch replacment

Has anyone used a ignition switch from advanced or auto zone instead of a yanmar one?

Also can someone explain this, while checking out a friend's ym2000 that would not crank pretty sure it's a bad switch, taking a piece of wire from battery + to selonoid it clicks, taking wire from battery + to starter it turns over. Here's what got me, using a set of jumper cables to the starter nothing happens, but using a small wire to starter turns it, why? The small wire almost melts to the post so we thought to try a jumper cable but get nothing, and yes the cables are good.

Still CRS half the time

But on my ym2000. Before I got Hurt. When it was doing that I replaced " Battery Ground Cable to the Frame" I'm pretty sure thats what it was.

I couldn't find one with 'twist left for Thermostart' so I bought Hoye's switch.

I did, easy to do. Take one wire at a time off. Works good. bill

Further explanation:

I used a multi-meter and get 12.6V on battery, I get 12.6V at the starter, I also get 12.6V at the ignition switch "battery" post. With the key turned in the ON position no dash lights display and I only read .01V on the "IGN" post wire on the ignition switch. So my guess is inside the switch is bad and not passing power? wouldn't that point to the switch?

I get no reading on the solenoid post coming from ignition switch.

Are you measuring the voltage with the switch in the on position or the crank postion? On postion should have no voltage to the ign post wire, crank position should have 12.6v.

no key in the ignition i get 12.6V on the post coming from the battery, key in turned to the ON position I get no reading on the "battery" post and only .01V on the crank position ("starter" post going to solenoid) so it is not passing 12.6V to the crank position.

so its the switch, thanks:thumbsup:

This is what I just came up with. I needed to put a charge on the battery were it been sitting cold

Neg. on the V-meter to the Grnd on the Battery. I showed 12.5 Pos. on the starter. and 12.5 0n the Pos. White/R on the Ing. switch with the Key in the on position the same Readings. On the starter Solenoid key in the on Position. On the Blk/Grn small wire on the top "0" with the key turned to the Start position 12.2 on the Blk/Grn tn the Solenoid. On the Starter Pos. from the battery 12.5 on the big pole next to it on the Starter motor "0" until you turn the "Swtch to the Start Pos." 12.2 I checked all of that with the decompression on. After all checked Good Enough :laughing: Hit my TS 10 sec. and it fired right up no smoke NODDA trace wich I set my throttle guessing to 1500 rpms. which was dead on the money.

No smoke? Cary your tractor is amazing! How in the world do you crank a cold deisel and have no smoke? Even my uncles JD when it was newer still had a puff at start up?

Mine will belch the black in a puff then have a lighter color till it runs for a min or so and warms, not bad but if you look you can see it.

No!!! It's sweet

It's done it before esp. in the summer or higher temperatures on cold starts not using the TS. but it's not much. The Typical Small Blk. puff of smoke on a Diesel. Also under a Load and throttle it up your get a puff or so. When I went over to Steve's at Spalding tractor and first cranked it up. Looking at the Orig. condition of it compared to the Refurbished Tractors. I had to ask were he got from. He wouldn't elaborate

Honestly he just said he didn't know. With his add being UTDA I was just shopping or "kickin tires". Did'nt even bring a Trailer. I left Him A Check though and I'd be back to pick it up.
