IH 3414 Battery problem

I bought a IH 3414. It had been sitting and the battery wouldn't hold a charge. I replaced the battery thinking the red cable was positive. Unfortunately, it had been replaced too. The red one was negative. You can guess what happened. Did I blow the alternator? Where should I go from here? Any ideas?

G'day there is every chance you have blown a diode/s in the alt but you never know your luck hook it up start it and grab the multi meter and see if it charges you might be lucky

Going back to my diode bridge theory, I would say the doides are history. With the battery reversed, you have two forward biased diodes across the battery so it is virtually short circuited by the diodes and hence will draw large current (for VERY short time) until the diodes burn out.

TRY A VOLT METER AN SEE IF ALT IS PUTING OUT BEFORE YOU REPLACE IT I KNOW SOMEONE THAT DID THE SAME AN GOT LUCKY IT DID NOT HURT THE ALT
