IH 674 or Ford 4XXX

I don't know why the big difference from Rick's area but my lead tech who's been with us for 17 years said the largest problem with rust was from the outside of the tank from between the fenders and the tank. He did say that he's only had to replace one that he can remember! I can't think of how many we sold as that grouping with the four speeds in reverse was a big hit on the farm for loader work in the early seventies. The hydraulic PTO was also a big hit on drivelines with sensitive shear pins over other makes at the time.
Normally before you would get enough water build up into the tank to rust you would be having fuel issues that would shut the tractor down.

Problems I have noted outside the tank are as you describe. Problems within the tank are generally due to sediment, not water, and the (repeated)plugging of the balance tube. I don't think we are that far off from saying similar things. Your glasses are tinged 2150 red, and mine have a blue tint. The cost of a replacement fuel tank for a Doncaster IH utility tractor is only problematic if you need one. BTW, thanks for letting us transfer that NH 790 a couple months back.

I'd go with either of the Fords, the oldest the the 4600 could be is '75, the 4630 could be from '90-'99 and the newest the 674 could be is a '77. Case-IH stopped making most of the IH based models around '85 (27 years ago!) so there is virtually no chance that the part that you want is still used on a current production tractor (or even something within the last 20 years). I haven't been to a NH dealer in a few years, but I think some of the utility tractors were still based on some of the old Ford designs until a few years ago.

Also in general, the Fords in this size range were far more popular than the IH utility tractors, at least around my area, making parts easier to get.

I'm still working through this one, but I appreciate all of your opinions. I'm hoping to go look at a couple of them this weekend. The Fords are at a local implement dealer, and the 674 is owned by an individual. They say the 674 has had the engine recently rebuilt, and the tires on it look good in the photos. I haven't gotten close to the Fords, just seen them from the road.

Yes we had 885 and an 895 like this and much of it was still the 674 underneath . Check rear view of fuel tank !

I currently own and use a IH 674. It has been great. Smooth old tractor and pulls great. That D239 engine is a worker! My fuel tank is clear and works from both sides. Haven't had to purchase many parts but the ones I did purchase were no problem to find.

Thanks Old Red, That info is always good to know. I am a Kioti and Ford person at the present. My brother is an IH person and has several and I grew up on a Farmall H. It seems he gets another tractor upgrade every so often and they are getting bigger. Possibley the 674 size soon if trend continues. So, good solid info like yours is always appreciated.
