Hi everyone, I got a 706 diesel with a shifting issue. First of all, very hard to shift between gears, secondly, going from low to high is very hard, almost hit and miss to get it to go, you really have to be rough with it. Previous owner had a loader on it which is now gone as I don't need it. I'm gonna start hunting for a manual but also thought I would gain some expertise from this forum as well. Where should I start looking or if anyone has pictures would also be very helpful to see the mechanics of operation.

Thanks

Cory

Sloppy, worn out external shift linkages.
Transmission brake, clutch and TA linkage out of adjustment.
Missing/worn linkage parts under the transmission range cover.

I got a manual ordered off ebay so I can start troubleshooting the issue. Thanks for the info

Succor, start by taking the sheet metal cover off right in front of the steering wheel. You will have to take the T/A handle, and the climbing handle off. This will expose the top of the linkage. Just check it out to see that everything is tight, and that the bearing at the top of the trans shaft is actually working in some way. Do you have the T/A in direct or cut back position? Old timer trick, pull the T/A back and see if it shift better then. This would be an adjustment on the T/A linkage or the clutch.

Wow, I will try that Barry, thanks for the tidbit. I've used the TA but I don't think I shifted with the TA engaged, it's in direct right now. I sure do like this tractor, it's strong for a 72 hp.

What engine do you have 282 or 310? Most 282's have been turned up running more like 80.

It's a 282, I don't know the actual HP of this machine, that's what I read from specs but it sure pulls like a JD 4010.

Hey Barry, I set the TA on so it's out of direct drive and it does't shift much better either. I'm not sure about the bearing you're referring to until I get the service manual to see a visual. I'm gonna start playin around with the adjusters a bit to see if I can improve it but also to see how it works.

If you go to Case IH 706 INTERNATIONAL TRACTOR you can look at parts diagrams to see how it is put together until you receive your manual.

Just thought I would ask on this forum, does anyone know any details about a 756 shifter kit upgrade to this unit and what that would involve changing and cost? Would it be something to look into?

Changing up to a 756 or 766 gets pretty involved and expensive!!! You can get this one right, just be persistant.

The bearing I am talking about is almost directly in front of the steering wheel and is under the sheet metal between the steering wheel and the fuel tank sheet metal. Take that off and you will see what I am talking about. Make sure all the parts in the shifter are good before you start going crazy.

Also make sure the clutch and the T/A are adjust properly.

Almost all of the time getting these things right will take care of the shifting problems. Owning any 06, the shifter just kind of comes with the territory.

2 problems so far, needed washers between the 2 shifters for side to side play now for the front to back sloppiness (about 4 inches) down at the botton where this shaft pivots, theres a clamp that needs tightening around this shaft which connects to the arm to change the range shifting below my feet. With this clamp tightened, it will illiminate alot of slop and the range shifter will move alot better. After this I think I'm going to check the clutch and TA adjustments!

Well, it's shifting alot better, even without checking the clutch and TA adjusted yet. I can actually shift on the fly, amazing!
