IH 784-which gear?

Can someone give me some guidance as to what gear I need to be using when I mow, disk, etc. My husband always did these things, but he has passed away and I do not have a clue which gear I should be using. Can anyone enlighten me?

Not knowing what the ground speed is for each gear for your tractor, it is hard to give you a quantifiable answer. I have several geared tractors and do the majority of my mowing and pulling in 1st gear. When I am moving from one area to another, then I shift into higher gears. I am also a bit more cautious (hesitant) than most people so I generally move a bit slower.

My suggestion is to find someone local that can spend a day with you guiding and going over the tractor including maintenance and driving. It may cost you $100 dollars or so but if it will keep you from burning the tractor up and running it safely you will be light years ahead. Just my $.02

Low range third or forth is good for most chores.

I've got a 784, and I've always used low 3rd or 4th for slower work, and 1 high for disking. Dont forget you have the T/A on the dash to give you kind of an in between speed on ranges.
