IH Case 105C, Ford 871, IH 865, Massey 1085
Reaching out to find anyone else that may have had front axle fail with the 6 bolts, flange/washer holding gear in place axle configuration in a
IH Case tractor. I have the 105C model. I bought with low hrs. and at IH dealership with limited warranty. The first right side fail was done right before
warranty ran out had to pay for parts $2,500. 2nd was due to wrong gears install (under warranty) and 281 hrs. from that repair I have a total trash out on left side ($6,000). When they opened the right side again
they said bolts not torqued properly and washers missing. I have no idea if this would have caused any un-due stress on left causing damage. Shop telling me no. Or if the
shop messed up left side after opening up for inspection of contaminates, parts, etc. by not torquing bolts etc. correctly. Someone else has told me he has had failure
with this axle configuration also.
Thanks

Not on a Case IH, but on a New Holland T4.100. A local farmer had recently purchased it used from a New Holland dealer. It failed during his first season rolling hay with it. The six bolts had come loose, parts dropped into the planetary gears and everything locked up. Made quite a mess of things. The dealer stood for all the parts involved but not the labor. When we looked closer, the other side was also loose and evidently beginning to come apart. I went through that side as well, with new seals, bolts, washers, dowels, ETC, with a liberal dose of Loktite 271. It didn't make the summer and the side that had failed showed signs of something loose inside again. At that point he traded it off for a Massey of equal size. I never saw the tractor again. I don't think that particular design was much of a bragging point for CNH.

How does your local farmer like his Massey? I'm looking for something to replace the 105C. I do have a 1085 Massey that I bought in late 90's with a rebuild on the motor. The thing always starts and has never given me any real problems. The wife who is extra small can't drive it, she is not able to reach pedals, etc. or have visibility, and it has no loader.

He's had the Massey for a couple years now (sorry but I don't know the model or the emissions system) and seems happy enough with it. Only complaint I've heard has to do with the common rail fuel system and its emissions. He says he has to keep the RPM higher than he likes during use. Something about the emissions system can create problems if he doesn't keep it wound up. This makes the loader operation rather difficult and jerky. As far as I know the tractor has held up well.
