IH254/MT2000 question

   / IH254/MT2000 question #2
Wish I could help by saying I am 100% certain they are the same, but I can't. Have you gotten a price from a dealer, like Case (254) - INTERNATIONAL DIESEL TRACTOR (1/82-12/88) Parts Diagrams ? If the price is anywhere in the same ball park ( which I doubt) I would just go with the OEM part. If there is a big difference in parts price, I would call All State and explain your situation and ask if they can supply more details ( like measurements) on their Mt2000 shaft so you can make a better comparison to the 254's. I would also ask if it can be returned if you order it and it isn't a match.

Thanks for the input Darryl. I have contacted Messick's, Sheaffer's, Small Import Tractor Supply, and All State. No one had a new IH254 steering shaft. Sheaffer's said the new part would have been $550 but he didn't have one. He said that if I sent him the old one he might be able to find something that would fit for $300-400. I'm leaning to getting the MT2000 shaft and hoping it fits. They have a 30 day return policy. I have thought of just fabricating the piece I need, but that part attaches to the shaft is very strange and beyond my capabilities. And it isn't (wasn't) available without the shaft.

At All State the parts guy said the IH cross-reference for that shaft was the IH 235. Does anyone know if the steering shaft for that tractor is the same as the IH254? Or what the difference between a 235 and 254 is? My 254 is manual steering.

Per Messicks 254 parts diagram, " (05-03) - STEERING, STEERING GEAR, STEERING WHEEL, PITMAN ARM & CONNECTIONS, 244 AND 254 WITH MANUAL STEERING

""The 234 uses Ref. 9 ( steering shaft assembly) that is 515.0 mm. The 244 & 254's use one 577.0 mm Long""

Thanks Darryl. Sorry for delay getting back to this. Work and surgery kept me away from this project. I’m guessing the 234 is similar to the 235, and that length shaft length is a little longer than mine (but might work). I was able to locate the shaft on ebay sans the bearings, etc, says it is made in India. I didn’t know these parts were made by anyone but Mitsubishi. And I would have to locate bearings to fit. Ebay can be a crap shoot.

Thanks, I have just started to look for those. It seems there are several different tractors that have similar parts. I'm new to tractor renovation. I was looking for some measurements to match the bearings. I'll check those links. Thanks again.
