Illegal deer hunting?

Understandable considering where you live.... I have this rule of thumb and that is, we eat whatever we kill. Mule deer, Whitetail, moose, elk, Antelope (tough as all ****), Big Horn sheep, whatever. I've consumed them all. Havn't shot a wild pig yet but I'm sure I will and we will eat that as well. I like BBQ'd pork.

Local whitetail hunting for me is eating it and they freeze well too. I only shoot does, have enough nice bucks hanging on the walls now and male deer are extremely gamey tasting. Give me a nice doe for the deep freeze any day.

Typically white tail deer venison should not taste gamey regardless of the gender as long as there is a quick clean kill and the entrails are removed within a few minutes of the kill shot...
With a clean kill shot the entire key to quality venison (should be as good or better than grocery store beef just leaner and a little sweeter) is THE COOLING PROCESS...it needs to start as soon as possible after the heart stops...the key to this is opening the carcas, removing the organs and allowing carcase to start cooling down...

If left in the field while a hunt continues the carcase should be propped open and protected from insects...

One mistake that is often made that leads to poor quality or tasting meat is attempting to specifically remove the genitals of male specimens...a knife should not even come close to the genitals (or the musk (tarsal) glands on the legs etc)...genitals should be cut well away when cutting around the **** and dropped with the guts all intact...rupturing any part of the intestines, bladder etc will also taint the meat...

It is also very easy to contaminate the meat when removing the hide...it is paramount to know where all the musk glands are located on the hind legs and be careful to avoid getting a knife near them...Take note that bucks in rut (when many trophies are taken) urinate on their tarsal glands that pretty much affects the entire rear legs...it only takes one touch of a knife to taint any other meat the knife may touch...

Good description.

I just put a large bodied (and rack) buck in the freezer in September, it was warm when I killed it and my wife has cooked some of it since we got it processed. Doesn't taste gamey at all, I think with your description it also depends on how it's cooked and how fast as to where the gamey taste comes from

Then you oppose catch and release fishing, too.

It is pointlessly cruel. Would anyone support catch and release land creatures using leg hold traps?

Many people do, they trap coyotes and foxes in leg traps and transport them to pens for dog training. Used to bring $100 each for a live animal.

Not exactly catch and release nor is it being supported as a recreational activity.

So if someone traps a fox/coyote on your land, takes it to a person with a pen to train their dogs and lets it go, that's not catch and release?

If the person training their dogs so they can go try to win a trophy at a dog vs. fox/coyote field trial does it simple for sport, isn't that recreational activity?

Bowling, basketball, baseball, any sport is considered a recreational activity, why isn't running an animal with a dog considered a recreational activity?

The coyote is probably shot at the end. It’s not let go under the impression it’ll go on to live a long healthy life.

Using non native predators (dogs) to run, chase, hunt native game animals is not sport or is even close to being sporting IMO...you can embellish the activity by labeling it as such but it does not make it so...

As cruel as nature can be it can't compare to the wickedness humans can exhibit...
