I'm getting SO SICK of gas prices and car taxes!

I drive Diesel, pay 1.41 euro per liter at the town station, and 1.45 at the highway. the guy next to me in the office pays 1.74 for a liter of petrol.
I pay some 500 euro of vehicle tax annual, and 600 for insurance.

Just to get the perspective straight, you guys complain over what you were used to, but what you get NOW, aint that bad...

Well you do get the government you want..In Europe, everything that moves is taxed to the extreme to cover all of the social stuff we don't want in the US...Just the way it is over there I guess...We are not, and have never gotten off cheap, Holland pays the same for oil as we do, they just tax it into oblivion.

They may also tax the cause they have little domestic oil so everything you burn means money shipped out of the country, probably to Russia or the Middle East. Seems very prudent to discourage endless oil imports and a good way is to tax it. We should do the same.

I'm paying around $4.50 a gallon for gas, about $400 a year truck license of a 1985 Chevrolet and $1300 for insurance...

Doesn't really sound all that different in the big picture...

One thing that amazes me is my European farmer friends have very nice 400 year old homes with the most modern conveniences and furnishings and pay almost nothing in property tax... that can't understand how a working person can pay California Property Tax...

A little 1100 square foot 1922 bungalow in East Oakland was nearly $8000 a year before the real estate crash... now it's more like $3500.

And... none of them pays a CPA to file tax returns!

It's only human nature to improve one's lot...

Gasoline has actually dropped six or seven cents in this area recently. Diesel, however seem to be hanging around at the same high ($4.45) price.
I did poke around yesterday and found a station that was 15¢ cheaper on diesel, so I stopped in to fill the bucket truck. Pretty substantial difference from one station to another. I really don't understand it.

But how much of that is state tax?
I filled up in Alexandria, VA 2 days ago - $4.05/gal, now down in Fulton, MS - $3.83/gal.

Value Added Tax (VAT) was introduced over here supposidly to replace purchace tax.
Purchace tax was a percentage of everything everybody spent which went to the government.
When VAT was introduced the purchace tax was not removed so who knows who gets it.
Trades people can claim VAT back after they have spent the money but have to give the government the VAT they 'collect' on their behalf.

Currently at 17.5% on almost everything

Dont know how we survive over here.
