Hey all,

I'm replacing a Ford 1710 with a Workmaster 55. It has suddenly occurred to me that my rotor tiller and mower are rated for 20-40 hp but the new tractor is 47.5 hp at the PTO.

My question is, can I just run them a bit off of 540 speed, and avoid stripping out gearboxes?

I don't believe you would have any trouble running them on the new tractor at 540 RPM, I don't think that you have any worries.

Slip clutch on each?

You're OK at 540 rpm, but get a slip clutch installed on the pto shaft (tiller end). Here's the setup I used for a small 4ft Yanmar RS1200 rototiller on my Kubota B7510HST. That tiller had no protection (shear pin, slip clutch) when I bought it. I had to use an shaft extender between the slip clutch and the tiller gear box to prevent the clutch from rubbing on the tiller sheet metal. I also used longer lower 3pt hitch arms to get room for the pto shaft, clutch and extension to fit. Fortunately, the arms from my 1964 MF135 diesel tractor worked fine for this job.

Flusher is right about a slip clutch. Not so much to protect the tiller or cutter, but to protect the tractor. If you get a rock caught in the tiller or hit a hidden stump while bush hogging, something has to give. If the shear pin or slip clutch are installed, they will be the things to give. If they aren't there, what gives could be something very expensive inside the tractor.
