Is there any rule of thumb out there about how many HP needed to pull a given implement? I have 18" to 24" topsoil with yellow clay under it. My father in law has a 45 Hp Kioti and I has 3 bottom plow, 6' cultivator, and 6' disc. The plow maxed out the tractor but was wondering if a bigger cultivator and disc would be possible.

45 hp will EASILY handle a bigger disc. In most conditions, incuding plowed ground, that's enough power to handle an 8' disc. As a generality, most tractors can handle a cultivator the same size or slightly bigger than what disc it'll pull. That depends on depth and number of and style of points/sweeps. 45 hp is marginal power for a 3-bottom plow in MOST conditions. And, power is only PART of the equasion. weight and/or traction factors greatly in the tractors ability to handle tillage tools.

if your on the boarder for a 3 bottom (which you are)

plowing in virgin sod is hard. turn plowing in already cultivated ground is easier. and having clean rust free, well setup bottoms will lessen the HP required.
