Tractor
Kubota M7040 cab/hyd shuttle - current, Kubota L3400 - traded
There are others here who have imported to Canada but in all their cases that I know of they picked up their tractors themselves.

I'm interested in knowing what company you used for freight / brokerage and any details you can provide on the arrangement. Did you have to get a roll-off truck to unload? how did the unloading work?

I would have bought a new tractor, but the Kubota dealers in the States told me they can't sell to Canadians. Is that legal???

RDG

I'm not sure about tractors but car dealers in the US won't sell a new vehicle to Canadians, there was a recent article in the news where a guy from Newfoundland filed a lawsuit against them. Will be interesting to see how this pans out.

I recently spoke to a dealer in the US and he said that Kubota USA had put pressure on him to stop selling to Canadians. The dealer in Canada had complained that a lot of cross-border shopping was going on. The Canada dealers will refuse to warranty any US machines as "Kubota Canada is a completely different entity than Kubota USA (on paper) and the machines could be manufactured differently for a different market."

I spoke to a US dealer who told me a machine that was close to $40,000 in USA was priced at $50,000 in Canada. He heard that from his Canadian customer who was shopping for a better deal.

If you are considering buying cross-border, even without warranty, how much would you spend on repairs in the first few years anyway. $10,000...? I don't think so.

The bottom line is that Canada, in general, is overpriced and until then, I will continue to purchase across the border. The dealers in Canada will eventually lower their prices to compete and (maybe) then I will consider buying from them.

Just use a USA address and pick up the machine yourself. The paperwork at the border is easy and they will help you fill it out properly. Remember, the "border service" is a service that you pay dearly for. Feel free to use it.

Also, to save state tax, sometimes you have to write out a waybill and get someone else, like a trucking company, to pick up the machine so they know it is going out of state. Waybills are easy to fill out and I have acted as my own trucking company many times. Be sure to ask the salesman how you keep from paying the state tax. The border won't care about the purchaser's address. Just keep the invoice and waybill when you go to the border crossing. (oh ya , and your wallet).

With our dollar at the all time high of $1.07 we can all save big purchasing our tractors and implements in the USA. I sure some of the car brokers would be happy to deal in tractors.

RDG-congrats on your purchase. I saw that B7800 with Woods FEL on tractorhouse.com. You got a terrific deal on a great unit.

Some dealers will sell new units to Canadians just like Canadian dealers were selling to US based buyers when the US $ was much higher then our $. I live on a border town and know all about the bs hurled back and forth between dealers.

I paid US$16K for my new B7800 (with 402 FEL, loaded tires + block heater) last year at this time from a Michigan dealer 50 km's south of me. The exchange at the time was so high that it cost me CDN $18K + GST and PST.

I would have take your deal over mine anytime.

I am heading over to Michigan on Tuesday to pick up Kubota replacement seat from the dealer. While I am over there picking up other on-line purchases I am going to buy a HD King Kutter box blade at the TSC store.

Some interesting news. I was at a dealer the other day (in Canada) who priced some stuff out for me. I asked him about the pressure they were getting with people purchasing cross border.

He pointed out that Kubota will release new information and pricing this week which *should* make it pointless to purchase from across the border.

Will be interesting to see how close we get. As it sits a L3540 up here is about 7K more than one from the U.S.A. while Kioti dealers are quite comparable in price.

If you wouldn't mind could you post the name / contact information of the trucker you used, or PM it to me. If I decide to go with a Kubota from the USA, it will save me a lot of hassle if I can have a hassle free experience by not having to worry about picking it up myself (which will be hard because I have no truck or trailer!)

That is of course if I can find a dealer willing to sell when I am looking :) Does not surprise me that Kubota USA has taken the same tactic as some auto manufacturers.

I highly doubt that Kubota prices will get in line with the USA. We'll see what this week's pricing does.

I doubt that the prices will ever be that close. They never have been-why would that change? I grew up on a border town and other then the 20 years I spent living in downtown Toronto I have shopped a lot in the US over my 48 years.

When I looked at Kioti last year at this time a CK20 w/FEL was US$12900 in Michigan. In Canada it was $17000 to $18000 as I recall

I'd have to agree that the price would probably never be so close as to truly make it pointless to import. I'm guessing they would drop them to say within $3k to 4k of each other for a L3540 class machine. I'm guessing they will think that shipping + brokerage will probably add $1500 or so for the averge buyer and the warranty / hassle / relationship with local dealer is probably worth the extra $2000.

Shocking to hear the price difference on the CK20. I was just at a local dealer who pointed out to me that they do purchase in USD so there should be no reason why the difference should be that big today.

I imagine though like with anything else, there tends to be a lot more competiton south of the border and that might play a factor.

I know that the price I was quoted on a DK40 was probably within $3K of the very best price I have heard of here - and that was when the dollar was weaker.
