Importing Used Tractor to Canada from USA

I searched the forums and did not find an answer to this question. If it has been answered before please put the link in this thread. Or link to an outside source? What is involved in importing a used tractor (I in the market for a compact 35 to 45 HP with Loader and Backhoe) from the USA to Canada. What are the customs requirements leaving the USA and coming into Canada. Thanks in advance.

I've had friends import a used motorcycle with absolutely no problem, smooth as silk. The same person has also had a miserable time, all depends on who does the checking at the border. Main thing I remember him telling me is you have to notify the border crossing ahead of time and the paperwork has to be there before you arrive..........Mike

Have done it several times (for temporary use in Canada) in the last 4 years.
Never had a problem.
No advance notice, or advance paperwork required.
Proof of purchase/ownership is necessary.

I've taken them back and forth several times... No problem at all as the US and Canada has an Ag trade agreement...

Make sure it's CLEAN when you get to the border, all the dirt must be cleaned off...

Thanks everyone.. This has been very helpful. Just the other day I found a low hour Kioti CK27 that he looked after meticulously. Backhoe with two buckets, new box blade, front auger with two bits, snow blower, 3rd function control. All for a very fair price. I did not have to travel across the border. I am going to keep my eyes open, maybe a bigger tractor south of the border will come up so thanks for the help.

So if I was importing a tractor into Ontario I'd pay 12.5% taxes at the border and that would be it? Trying to see what I've missed in comparing finding something in Michigan Vs finding something in Alberta.

But if I purchased it privately I won't get charged any Tax at the border? Can't find a reference to this on the Canadian Govt website. But had a look on the Combine Forum and on their thread if you say its for private use then no tax just customs charges and shipping.

So if you are in the US and they delivery from Canada to you, you avoid the hassle all together. If you buy new Canada you obviously get the sales tax and possibly any tarriffs.

I cannot afford to buy new so I need a 2013 or 2014 year of the model I want. Once I get south of the snowbelt and salt on the roads and look for my tractor, the machines are in far nicer condition for the same or less money. That, and bigger selection, is why I want to look at importing from the USA.

I've imported my snow blower and in the past a few aircraft.
The snow blower was modestly priced and I had a handwritten bill of sale so it sailed thru easily.

On pricier items research and know the tariff item number as that'll help.

Big trick is 'for personal usage' otherwise if commercial you need a broker.
Border will want to charge the federal tax with the onus on you to remit the provincial taxes.

Unlike with cars they don't have a tractor 'blue book' to refer to so your actual bill of sale will be the document they'll have to accept.

When I started importing I went to the 'long room' which is their office, so to speak and that (in Montreal) is not at the border.
However later on as a business I need to use a broker.

As intimidating as it seems a visit to the 'long room' is well worth while.
One thing I know is the border agent can not be over ridden by a superior so get it right the first time.

Piloon thanks so much for the info, I'll probably play safe and go through a JD dealer, there's a bit of stuff for sale privately on Craigslist but it's difficult to see if it has any liens against it.
