Since I'm doing this right now, I thought I'd mention it here. Diskeeper lets you set things up an automatic defrag so you can set it and forget it.

Mike:
I've been using Diskeeper for years (first ran into it on a VMS machine) and still think its one of the best. The analysis display sells it every time I show it to a client (and how bad their disks are).

We run it on all our servers (116 of them) and I run it on my PCs and laptop. Great product, works as advertised, great support.

Diskeeper is a requirement for NT machines. Also, I use the scheduler in Win98 to run scandisk and defrag automatically on a regular basis.

I never used that one, but when I was managing a big VMS system I used something similar.. made by Raxco. This was years ago, and I don't know if they even exist anymore, let alone have products for PC's. But yes, disk defragging is a good thing. What I loved about Raxco is that they had all kinds of dynamic tuning utilities.. things that would normally require manual analysis and fooling around and re-booting.. they could change on the fly as system loads dictated. I used everything they had, and never regretted it. I'll have to look into the Diskeeper products now that I'm just running PC's. Norton's leaves something to be desired, in my humble opinion.. but maybe I'm just not using it right.

Mike,
Can you tell me what it means when each time I try to defrag and the cpu locks up. Jim

It's the R4 tires, definately. Try defragging with R1's and you'll have no problem. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I used to run a free version and it still appears to be available... Disk Keeper Lite... We use to run it on Win95 (if my memory serves) and NT. The description seems to indicate this version is for NT. Not sure if works for newer/other MS OSes!?!?

Talking about improving performance... More times than not, extra RAM gives the biggest boost!

Extra RAM is good too. I get all mine at Crucial.

What kind of PC? What operating system? How much RAM? How fast is the CPU? When you say lock up, do you mean the CPU is at 100% busy and there's no disk activity?
