Sagebrush, Unless I am misstaken your truck does not have the traditional lift pump. The common rail system on the HO cummings is a direct GM clone. There are several in line kits that get mounted PRE oem. Most mount between the tank and the fuel cooler. Three biigies are Nicktane ( Cat ) Racor and mega ( Baldwin). Most kits with head SS fittings fuel lines etc are $240. I was recently talking to a Dodge service manager and he said that his feeeling is that many who do not install 2 micron filters in the HO system will see injector failures. I buy Delvac one from a guy in OH who is a lube specialist and posts on one of the diesel forums. He had a microscopic photo of a injector tip after 90k or so from a duramax that only ran the stock filter. It looked like photos of the moon with craters. Add to that most feel that the factory Fuel filters should be replaced every 10k instead of oem specs at 15k. Haveing seen some of theese cut open at the 15k mark I will certainly be changeing mine at 10k intervals. I find they are far less expensive if you order a half dozen at a time. 2 micron filteration seems VERY cost effective insurance for those of us who plan to put high mileage on or drive well out of warranty. try www.nicktane.com the installation instructions are worth reading. This is a duramax set up but I'm sure you could easily put the same set up together for a cummings. Far more reasonable on price. The cat 2 micron filter is like 17 bucks, can be found easily and is a nice large element. Dave

The Cummins HPCR does not have the same injector problems as the GM setup. According to Cummins the injectors are designed differently. I hadn't been to www.turbodieselregistry.com lately so I went for a look- see before I posted this. It has been a non- issue for the last month or two. I didn't go farther back but I'm sure if it was an issue it would be a hot topic like it is on the GM boards. A few posters have reported dirty filters at low mileages so maybe Cummins runs a more efficient fuel filter to start with.

I think its important to note that I received my info directly from a Dodge service manager. If you do not have a HO cummings this is a non issue. One must always take info from different forums with a grain of salt. Some of theese sites are VERY biased for or against another brand. ANY high pressure common rail system with out a 2 micron filter WILL on average suffer injecter failure sooner than the those who do not use the extra filteration. There is a lot of crud in diesel fuel that is blasting the injectors at 20,000 PSI and up. Injectors are a normal wear part. Hopefully by adding the additional filteration We are pro longing that wear by another 50k -100k miles. We live in a time when parts are deseigned and manufactured to last the warranty period and not much longer. Considering the cost of injectors and labor $250 for a extra filter, at least to me, seems like money well spent. The high pressure system on the cummings is a recent addition. Give them time and you will likely see the same troubles. To what extent is unknown. I would certainly have little trouble agreeeing that Dodge' OEM filter is better than set up. Time will tell but for my $$$$ I want to protect my investment. It would be VERY nice if someone would come up with a 2 micron filter for both oem's that would screw right on the factory head. Sagebrush, The inline filter system I have been looking at is the Racor 660 with heater. Its like $235 with all the parts and anoter $100 roughly to have it installed at a dealership. I am now leaning back this way as the cost is the same and it seems much easier. I would really like to hear how you like your Aux tank when you get it. They seem like a good outfit. I think with my SWB I can only go about 60 gallons but that will work. Which filler pump are you looking at from Northern ? I would certainly still use the Golden rod in line fuel filter and water blocker. More filteration certainly cant hurt and they sure dont cost much. Harv, What happened after the bad fuel incident ? Did you have to change your filter again ? Duramax owners might want to take a peek at this site www.Dieselplace.com look up a member DmaxalliTech He is a Master tech at a GM dealership. At the bottom of his post you will see a link for prices. I believe his prices include shipping and tax. You can NOT beat this guys pices on OEM fuel filters, Transynd, oil Filters, Alli spin on filters, Grape juice etc. I have spoken to him several times. Very pleasant and knows his stuff. Dave

Dave we use them on most of our diesels. They are simple and easy to put on, about 10 minutes.

I recieved my fuel tank/tool box today. I expected it much later, it took about 3 days. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Good quality unit, better than I expected, clean, straight welds. Good latches, the tool box lid closes nice. Fit and finish is A+. Better than my old RDS box. The installation kit seems to be well done and complete. Now I need to find the time to install it. I'm not sure where I'm going to mount the valve. But I figure it will take a couple hours to install.

This may be a good time to install an extra fuel filter on the truck too. To many choices. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Most on TDR are using the Racor 400 something? Has anyone mounted an extra fuel filter. Location?

I am going to get the Racor set up on Wednsday. Gave up on the lift pump on the aux tank but I do still want to get another tank and refuelling pump. They have several in Northern Tool. I am a little confused by all the choices that dont seem much different. Maybe you will post some photos of that box when you get it installed. Dave
