My wife LOVES this idea.

Where do I find out about auctions like you describe?

Thanks,
David
Newspapers and flyers hanging in drugstores, convenience stores and so forth. Look for Farm auctions, or Estate auctions.

Usually the flyers and such will list most of whats being sold.

You can also search the internet for estate auctions in your area.

Go to several of your local farm equipment dealers/feed mill, Tractor Supply Co store and they usually have newspapers such as "farm and Dairy" which list all the auctions in your area. All the auctioners have websites and they show pics of all the farm equipment and dates/times for future auctions

My local gas stations have those freebee classifed newspapers or the ones you pay 50 cents for and they usually have the auctions listed also.

I bought all my used implements off Craigslist. Much more straight forward than ebay. There are search engines (SearchTempest is one) that allow you to store specific searches over a wide geographic area and even alert you to a new posting. Way better than classifieds these days. Of course you need to negotiate with the owner but that is preferable in my view to bidding on something like ebay or even at a large farm auction where you don't know anything about the history of the implement.

Around here on Craigslist, most everyone wants new price for old junk.

It is an issue. I got a great condition Woods Brush Bull mower at the end of last season though by offering the guy about two thirds of his asking price. The ad had been posted weekly all summer and when he finally realized he wasn't going to get his asking price, I got a great mower.

Nothing about Craigslist insures you will find a bargain. There is both junk and overpriced used stuff listed all the time. Point is that it is actually a very efficient way to find used equipment compared to classifieds or the occasional farm auction as least around my neck of the woods.

David,

You said, "I think I want bucket grapples and will route the hyd from the rear vs the &$800 WR Long electric setup."

With what you have indicated for use, the brush and tree clean up, etc., I would say the $800 would be money well spent. When you are operating a grapple of any kind, bucket mounted or true root grapple you are constantly opening, closing the grapple, lifting the loader and curling the load. When you operate the grapple from the rear remotes you have to take your hand off the joystick and move it to a seperate lever to open and close the grapple. With the electric over hydraulic you can hit the button with your thumb close or open the grapple and let off the button and you are lifting the loader or curling the load all without moving your hand. If the hydraulics are up for it you can be lifting and curling or operating the grapple at the same time.

Todd,

They had a barely used WR Long Rock Grapple they just talked me into (got a good deal I think), plus a brand new Wood BB72X at a slight discount.

So I am going for the Joystick control also...

Thanks for talking sense.
Be well,
David

Auctions are great for those millions of items you need around your property that you will actualy use but never wear out.

Logging chains for instance. I bought a 30 ft section of logging style chain(heavy duty) with the hooks on both ends I think for $6 or 7. New, they are about $75-80 + plus tax for the heavy duty rated type that I bought.

I bought 4 used plastic 5 gallon gas cans for I think 50 cents or 1.00 each. I put used oil in them and antifreeze and take it to my dealer when I change my oil.

Comealongs to tighten up chains etc. Usually 1/10 of the price new.

For maintaining that gravel road, I recommend a grading blade with rotation and tilt. The controls don't have to be hydraulic. My manual blade does the job and cost about $300 a few years back.

I totaly agree about Craigslist there is a lot of junk but if you are patient you can find some good used equipment. Last summer I traded a good laptop computer (that I did not need) for a 6 foot finishing mower which has been wonderful. I had a old 5 foot that stayed broken all the time last summer and I wasted a lot of sweat trying to get my grass cut.
I just recently found a great buy on a used commercial riding mower that I use to do my trimming and cutting some of my ditches, it has also been great.

However, I can not tell you how many junk adds I have looked at. I find reading some of the adds on craigslist are really good cheap entertainment, I have chuckled more than once on some of the items and people will try to sell.
