They were preserved in a cedar box and currently that is where we are keeping them. We are going to research way to preserve them but would like to display in frames. The only problem with that is light is not a friend to old documents.

Heat is very bad too.

The reason I mention this is, that had I found such documents in any house in which I've lived, it would've been in an uninsulated unfinished attic.

For display, you would want to use a archival quality frame, backer, matting, and glazing. The correct type of glazing, aka the glass or plastic used in the frame, will removed the UV light that is destructive. Humidity and chemicals in the air can affect the mounted material as well. There are frame shops that will seal the frame and pump out the air. I think some will replace the air with another gas but I have never dug much into that side of framing. :)

If you do frame these materials, take it to a good frame shop, do NOT take it to Micheals or similar craft store. Get someone who really knows what the heck they are doing. It won't be cheap but even Micheals is not that cheap even with coupons and you still have to do the framing.

Dan,

Thanks for the info. We have a quality frame shop in town and I will check to see if they do this type of framing.

Thanks,
David

"Acid free archival storage" is the magic phrase to expand on what Dmccarty said. You can find information and products online.

Maybe sell some to pay for the archival storage materials to use on what you keep.

What area do they deal with? My wife and I have been interested in family history for a while and we both have old family roots in the Guilford/Randolph/Moore/Rockingham area of NC.

Any idea why there would be a collection of deeds? Was someone a big landowner? Or worked in the court?

Nice pieces of history you have there, I think I would be tempted to sell the one to the Co-op if the price was right, may help fund the framing on some of the rest.

I would be shocked if a store that only did frames could not provide archival quality materials. The materials are not that expensive compared to non archival. The cost of decent framing is the labor and having some of the tools to do a quick but good job. We just had a 12x18 photo framed and it cost $120ish using archival materials. The frame is something like 16x22. We talked to two frame shops and they both were about the same in price.

If the documents can fit into one of the standard frames, you can get frames with matting and backer board at the stores if you look carefully. I should have mentioned this before but I assumed that the paperwork would be an odd size. Tape used to mount the documents should also be archival.

You would think that something as simple appearing as framing would be, well, simple. On Photography community, including forums, reviews, and galleries from Photo.net, which is an ancient website in Internet years, there is an article about framing that was written in the 90's. The author, who owns the website, spent quite a bit of money on two frames, I think they were something like $600 and $800 in 1990's dollars. One of the shops was in NYC and was framing for high end art and museums. They had an old clean room from a chip factory that they used to mount the art in a dust free environment. That may sound excessive, but I just had to frame a couple of photographs at very short notice and we used frames from Michaels. What a PITA. I would get the photos in the frame and paint would fleck off from the cheap a....ed made in China frames. I would then have to take things apart and start over. PITA.

I think your documents are worth far more than a Michaels frame. :D

I recall a story told to me by my Dad (born 1910). During WWI, my Grand father had a matched set of Percheron mules...the Army came to the farm, commandeered the mules, and sent my Grandfather a check...for $800. Seemed like a lot of money, but stranger things have happened.

They are from the Cleveland and Lincoln County area. All seem to be related in some way to my wifes family. There were several large land owners in her family. Over the years the lands were divided between the siblings and at that time they were large families. My thought is once new deeds were drawn up my wifes grandfather and great grandfather kept the old deeds or were given the old deeds.
