Bummer.

a) Pictures rock. We love carnage that SOMEONE ELSE did. It shows us just how great the rest of us are...until we mess something up for ourselves...then we post pictures. Circle of life.

b) Replace the hood and don't look back. It is a bite, but you learned a great lesson. If lessons are on your side, that is the last scratch your hood will ever get. You got off easy...I promise.

I like Mr. Fishpick's idea, though. Next iteration of the manual will include "Safety Item #342: Do not utilize hood as seat, step, or carrier. Children over the age of 37 months (or 40#) should not be secured to hood for any purpose. Dogs and Alpaca to 50# may be transported on hood with proper tie-downs and even weight distribution. Under no circumstances should BBQ be secured to hood."

I've got a slightly scratched hood we took off a new BX24 that I will sell you for $85 plus freight. I'll get a pic of it and post it up.

Send 66gladiator the money and get his hood save it till you decide you are done moving engine hoist and the swap it out.

Sounds like a deal even if you wait to put it on.

According to a search I just did the hood is only $162. Yup- high but then less than I might have guessed....
Part number- K2581-54110 K2581-54110 Kubota BONNET, UPPER

I suppose if it happened to me I'd be really really ticked at myself....then buy the dang hood, er excuse me- bonnet

Heh heh- I was doing a search for the type of plastic the hood/bonnet and cowling are made of and turned up this old post of MINE. Now I AM the one with a broken cowling, thanks to an errant piece of lumber breaking off a large piece under the front grill, and yes I'm really ticked. $250+ for the cowling:eek:

So did anyone ever determine exactly what plastic this is? I have most of the broken off piece and would like to glue it back on. I have one of those hot air plastic welders too but have had very poor results with it, but might try it.

Added in edit- I found a mold mark indicating PC+PBT+ABS Now to find a glue that works.

Glue doesn't work well with these type plastics. Bondo isn't a good choice either, the hood is too flexible for it to stay put. The hot air welder will work, but takes practice & never looks like new. If "New" is the look you are after, there is only one way to get there, and it costs about $177!

Acetone works well with ABS. Melts the material together like the old plastic model building glue.
Haven't tried it on a combination like this.

Other than replacing it, which you mentioned you don't really want to. I'd drill and screw a metal or some other material patch over it to keep it relatively sealed up. May not look pretty but will function fine.
If its not in a too complicated spot you could even make the patch look like its part of the hood by oversizing it and centering it, kind of like a hood scoop but flat. Maybe use diamond plate, it may give a bit of protection from the next .......ooops. That would be something an armour plated tractor hood.:D
I broke a molded in mounting lug off the underside of a JD riding mower hood. Tried to glue it on about 3 times with different wonder epoxies. Once I put the plastic air cowling back to it, it snapped off. I finally carefully drilled thru the hood and used a stainless bolt, locking nut and finishing washer. It's holding up fine, no cracking around the hole I drilled.

Use Devcon Plastic Welder II. It is a two part epoxy with a solvent in it that softens the plastic so the epoxy can develop a molecular bond during the cure cycle. It's made in USA and avail at Wallyworld. I've used it on motorcycle plastic which is a PC/ABS blend (Kydex) and have never had a problem afterwards.

Clean and sand the backside of the break and use alum gutter flashing as a patch (sand and clean this too). Finish the outside as you would do any other type of body work.

I haven't used Plastics welder II . But if its anything like the oringinal it's great stuff.
This is what I would use, never met a part it didn't stick to and forget the name plastic , it works very well with every material. not just for plastic.

Waxman,

That looks like the stuff I use. I think ITW/Plexus bought Devcon some years back.
