A faulty earth somewhere can also create some interesting problems.

Usually with a ground issue there is other stuff going wonky. Everything else is working fine.

Milkman, don't think it is the alternator at this point since everything seems back to normal after getting rid of that corroded terminal spacer. Fingers crossed.

I did check the battery voltage after the car had been sitting a while and it is a steady 12.5.

take your voltmeter put it on dc volts, connect one side to the starter positive post (thick wire) connect the other side to the positive side of the battery, while cranking, let us know the voltage it displays

then switch to the starter casing, and the negative post on the battery and perform the same test

While holding probes in place I have my wife crank the car. Starter turns over a few times and voltage drops to about 10.5 while cranking (which I am also assuming is about normal) but car will not crank. Voltage returns to 12+ when she stops trying to crank it.

can you use the correct words here please? the wife cranked the car (engine spinning, starter engaged.) then you write the car will not crank??? do you mean the engine is turning but not starting?

dielectric is non conductive. its actually the opposite of what you want. clean your terminals as best you can and make sure the connectors that clamp on have 0 gap and everything is very tight, you should not be able to see light anywhere between the battery terminal and the battery itself

put the rings on from this kit, then make sure everything is nice and tight, then spray all exposed terminals down with the spray

this keeps corrosion at bay

Oh come on Bill, you know what I meant. I said the starter turned over a few times. And yes, the car would not start.

Thanks. Good to know. Doesn't seem to have hurt anything. Wonder why you would use non-conductive grease on things like 7-pin trailer plugs and such..............maybe I was using it wrong there too.

I cleaned them very well with a terminal brush. Cleaned the battery posts as well, But as mentioned, the corrosion was primarily on the inside of the post spacer, which I discarded. Fortunately with this battery the terminal clamps tighten down nicely with no gaps.

I've got those rings on several of my vehicles. I find that they work pretty well but corrosion still creeps in if untended.

N80,

I wasn't trying to be smart, when troubleshooting things, i don't assume things, its led me down to many bad paths in the past.

You're right about that. Been there, done that too.
