The package shrinkage has been going on for a long, long time. Ice cream used to be 5 quart buckets now 4 quart or smaller. Orange juice half gallon 64 fluid ounces now 52 fluid ounces, etc.

Now if I could just get my waist to shrink that easily..

Just different packaging. BOTH 48 count and 72 count in a 4 pack ARE STILL AVAILABLE.

On Amazon both sizes are priced the same, i.e, 1/3 less for same price, your choice. Also saw same pricing for different size packaging on Walmart website.

I order things like laundry products online mostly from Sams Club, Amazon, or Walmart. Some things like Downy come in different sizes from different retailers. All three of the above have products in look alike dispensers for the same price. But some will be 150-oz, some 140-oz, and some 130-oz. The OP is just too stupid to realize that this is a marketing trick. And prices will never come down to where they were. The previous administration's inflation rate of 4-6% a year has made sure of that. And if you want to know where that figure came from Google it. The 21% rate under Biden means that it takes $100 to buy what $79 could at the start of his term. Some people are just plain STUPID!!
