I'm looking at buying an 8 foot Dale Phillips 3pt mower. I never heard of this company before and have only used Rhino heavy duty mowers for my pastures. I'm told that these heavy duty Dale Phillips mowers are as good as Rhino heavy duties and will do anything the Rhino will. Has anyone had any experience with the Dale Phillips? Your comments please, both good and bad.

Unclebuck,

I have the 7' Dale Philips shredder/mower and am extremely pleased. That being said, this is the only one I have ever used. I have cut thru some pretty thick stuff with it though. One job I used if for i was cutting live oak thickets and it never stopped. It seems very well made, and I guess another endorsement is that I went back and got a DP's Post Hole digger. Again, just from looking, not using other equipment it seems as heavy duty as the big name brand stuff and much better than the howse/king kutter stuff. Just my two cents worth. I am going to link you to some pictures that are on another thread here. I think this will work-

Are you planning on putting that mower behind your L2900? That seems like too much mower for that tractor. What is the size of your current Rhino? I guess if you don't have a lot of high grass or brush you might be okay, but an 8' mower is also pretty heavy for the 3PH to lift. I would think a 6' rotary cutter would be the maximum width recommended by Kubota for your tractor.

I've heard Dale Philips is a very good brand, but I don't have any experience with them.

BTW: Welcome to TBN. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif There are lots of TBNers from this area.

fireshawn,

Thanks for that info!! They looked as though they were really built stout, so I went ahead and bought the Dale Phillips 8 footer, heavy duty. The only thing I really did like about the Rhino I had over the new Dale Phillips were those chains the Rhino has hanging down in the front and back to stop rocks and debris from flying out. Wise Co in some places has it's share of rocks in a pasture!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif...HOWEVER, for that major difference in price between the two, I figured I could always do the chain thing myself as aftermarket in my buddy's shop!.

Oh, and in this house, our troops are ALWAYS supported!!

Thanks again!!

jinman,

No, the 8 foot Dale Phillips is behind my brand new LC Montana 5740C tractor!! That's one fine tractor too!! That's a 57hp motor and 52 hp at the PTO, and you're correct in that the 8 footer would have been way too much mower for my L-2900. I had a TW-60 Rhino (5') that I used behind that Kubota L-2900. Thanks for your thoughts on this!

Thanks for that "Welcome" too. I've noticed there's a bunch of us from this area in TBN.

Have a GREAT day!!

I made a chain guard for the front and back of mine, but the front design needed to be tweaked a little. I used 1/4 square tubing to weld the chain to the first time and it went too far into the blades. I took it off since I wasn't going to be using it for a while and am in the process of welding up some chain to some angle to redo the front. I am pretty sure you will be pleased. Good luck, and be safe, they do chunk some stuff!

Thanks for that info Fireshawn!! I can well understand what you meant with your initial front problems of the chain going into the blades. Looking under there, those blades are very close to the front, compared to the Rhino I previously had. I'm going to give what you've suggested a try. I'll let you know.

I have had a Dale Phillips 6' finish mower for maybe 20 years. Last time I spoke to Dale Phillips about parts, they had none available for finish mowers. That was several years ago. They did say that "Big Bee" mower parts would mostly interchange. You may be shocked at the price of a spindle though.

Can you dissasemble the spindle and rebuild it? i know I have replaced the pulleys with taper lock hubs because the set screws on the OEM pulleys came loose and the bore and keyway wore out.
I've attached a Big Bee Parts book. Good Luck.
