I watched the cotton picker (stripper out here) video in amazement. I still remember the braceros picking cotton by hand dragging the sack. Daddy would weigh the sack with scales his Grandad using in the 1800s. Then he got a 2 row elevator type stripper which blew the cotton into a trailer. I would throw the cotton to the back of the trailer with a pitchfork and tromp the cotton down so we could get 2 bales on the trailer. Next came the strippers with the basket--dump into a trailer, tromp that down and off to the gin. Modules were after I left the farm. And now this. Fantastic!!!

If it wasn't for a submissive government that willingly overlooks our open borders so that business and ag can have an unending stream of illegal labor, our mechanized eqpt industry might work harder to develop machines that will pick everything faster and better with relatively little human labor. But that's another story for another time and they'd prefer having illegal labor that will costs us billions down the road.

Will the newest 5x03 series engines meet EPA tier 3 emissions that go into effect 1-1-08? Looking around the Deere powertrain site there is no 2.9 liter engine in tier 3 line up. I saw a 2.4L and a 3.0L which I think is the engine in the 5225 and 5325.

2.9 is a three cylinder with sleeved cylinders vs the 3.0 a 5 cylinder with no sleeved cylinders. If the 3.0 ends up in the 5x03 series in place of the 2.9, long term I would rather have a sleeved engine.

My original thinking was the new 5x03 series may be very short lived with the current engine. The 5603 uses the 4.5 liter and that engine does appear in the tier 3 emissions in a couple of different configurations. One version purely mechanical injection and two others with varied amounts of electronics and common rail injection. All of my information is coming from Deere's powertrain pages. I don't know if these apply to ag applications but I would think so since ag is an 'offroad' application.
Regarding the Tier III compliance question, I really don't think Deere would be introducing a 2008 line that isn't compliant with 2008 regulations.

That new Cotton picker is amazing, it will change the way cotton is harvested.

I would wonder why when the Case-IH unit puts them up in a huge square bale making it easier to make a full load on a truck as well as handle with normal forked loaders. The farmers with the round hay bales have always had difficulty hauling them and I don't see much difference here.

The bracero program in the 1950's was legal and I believe was part of Ike's Operation Wetback program as it was called then. Seems I read that it provided for temporary "passes" or whatever you call it for laborers, sanctions against employers, and deportation into the interior of Mexico.

The Case-IH machine does put them into large bales however, they have to stop to do this. The key with the JD machine is continous movement. Plus by doing this you don't have to have all the other equipment that goes along with cotton harvesting (modules, etc.)
