Universal tractor hyd/tranny oil is what goes in there. Too many confusing part numbers in the manual!!

A general rule is that universal tractor oil can always be used in a hydraulic system but hydraulic oil can't always be used in a tractor. If you have a log splitter around or any other hydraulic equipment, you can just keep the universal tractor oil around and not have another pail in the way.

Pay close attention to the book as you are actually draining and filling five areas. The outer axle extensions and inner extensions are actually sealed from the main tranny/hydraulic area and need to be drained and filled.

Hi everyone. I just changed the transmission and outter drive axles on my 5740C. I used the Universal Hyd/Transmission oil from TSC called Premium Traveller. It lists about every tractor out there that this oil is meeting their specs. It also is blended with additives for the wet brakes and high wear resistance for the gears. It was around $39.00 for 5 gallon buckets. Ken is right about the five drains. There are 3 on the main transmission and one each at the final drives of the rear axles. Have fun, mine took nearly 15 gallons to fill everything back to proper levels.

Just want to make sure that the service on these tractors is understood. The premium compacts are different than the utility tractors as they have the outboard reduction gears. These gears have their own oil supply and need drained and filled seperate of the main tranny/hyd sump. The utility tractors don't have these outboard mounted reduction gears but they do still have seperate lube to both sides of the main tranny/hyd sump. When you drain the main sump on the utility tractor, you aren't draining the castings to the sides of the main casting and when you fill the main sump, it won't get to these areas.

On the premium compacts, I was talking about 5 points that need drained and filled, not the number of drain plugs. Main tranny/hyd sump, two inner axles, and the two gear reduction cases.
