Have you tried looking at Ironplanet.com? They sell lots of used equipment for decent prices. You bid and if you win the bid, you are responsible to ship it. Mini Excavator's Utility vehicles, tractors , dump trucks etc. I'm looking at purchasing a mini excavator for 8k from them. You can buy this and pay it off doing side work for your neighbors...

Good luck with your decision.
I have not. I have a mental block about buying something without the chance to look it over and see how haggard it is.

If you can't tell. I'm leaning towards buying thanks to everyone input.

Mine isn’t a Mini, but one of the smaller excavators that isn’t considered a mini. I bought with the intent to pull stumps for 2 years and sell. I don’t ever want to sell it, as long as I am healthy enough to run it. I don’t know what your land is like. How much you have and how much needs to be done. But I really don’t plan on selling mine in the next 10 years. I can do things that I would never have dreamed of doing before.

I had thoughts to rent one for my septic tank install and turned out the hole and tank was $8K. I did use my little 9' hoe on the drain field and pipe from the house. Let someone who does it every day handle it.

Buy, it does not have to be new, I purchased a 5 year old JCB 201 ten years ago, in use nearly every day. Moving trailers, straightening machines, moving logs (log grab and rotator), moving oil barrels, clearing brash, feeding the shredder, loading the muck spreader and some times I even use it to dig holes and trenches. A digger is a machine that is difficult to justify on paper but lends a helping hand all the time. The advantage of purchasing used is that it's price will remain remarkably stable.

I do hope this might be helpful. I too had this same conundrum as far as renting or buying. I chose to purchase a micro excavator. I came to this decision because of the following. First, I needed to dig about a dozen ditches to make some French drains (we have very clay rich soil) to drain the winter springs & runoff on our property. I also need to run about 200' of direct burial electrical wire for service to my shop. Finally, my wife wanted a storm cellar. All total I figured about 2 weeks renting a mini or a "real" backhoe. Our local rental place (a "united" nationwide company) quoted me 3K - 4K for the 2 weeks plus transportation for the equipment (~$250 each way). I started looking around for a backhoe for my tractor (Mahindra 2555 - 55hp). Mahindra will gladly sell me an attachment backhoe for around $8K (ouch). Other 3 point backhoes ranged from $4-7K. I looked around for used backhoes but for something that still runs expect $15K++. Mini-x used from 16K+ New from your first born to OMG really!

After looking around I did purchase a 1 ton Micro-X from (sorry) China - a Hightop. All total with a rock breaker, two different sized buckets and quick connect shipping, duty, customs broker, etc. the final cost was right around $6K. I'm still finding projects to use it for so I haven't sold it, yet. I initially thought I'd need something larger or at least something that had a digging depth of over 7 foot but I was mistaken. One of the first projects I did was dig out for the storm cellar. What I found was that by sloping one edge I could easily dig to over 12 1/2 feet without having to continually moving the excavator, in other words, I could park the excavator on the ramp, dig down and still reach the top to dump the bucket. After I dropped in the concrete and blocked up the walls it was easier to backfill with the tractor than with the really slow excavator. Please don't get me wrong, I really like the unit, it's just really slow moving on it's tracks (about 3-5 mph I think). The excavator worked very well back filling in the French drains but the volume of back fill required on the storm cellar, not so great.

Will I sell it, probably. I've already been offered more than I paid for it. I know some will be upset about buying from China, but the differences in price was just way to much to ignore. All said & done, if I needed to do it again, would I. Yes, I probably would; however, I would probably do things a bit different. First, my biggest expense was after it reached the US (over 1/2 of the total cost). Customs charges, brokerage charges, port charges and duty. If there ever is a "next time" I would probably get a Chinese company broker. Demand only door to door service or incoterm DDP (delivered duty paid). The seller will moan, groan and tell you how much you could save if you just ship CIF (delivered to port of your choice, insurance paid) which is what I did on the excavator. Do your research and then speak to someone who's done this before - seriously, I did volumes of research and from what I could tell it was going to cost me about a grand once at port. Unfortunately, this grew to over $3K. When I checked on another item of simular weight/size I was again told it was way too expensive to ship DDP, BUT WHEN PRESSED, I was told it would cost ~$1,400. It is a known fact (to all but those of us that don't do this for a living), that it is much less to have China do all the paperwork and initiate from China than to have an American company do it. Sorry big customs brokers.

Hope this helps!

I built my current house several years ago including installing the septic system. I decided to buy a used Cat 307 with a hydraulic thumb for $20,000. It has a cab with heat and AC and runs great. Over 10 years later, I still have it. It doesn't get used that often but when I need it, it's here. A few years back, I had a need (?) for a small bulldozer. I now have a very nice used Cat D4 that was repainted and runs great. The important thing is to have the equipment looked at by an experienced equipment mechanic to make sure you won't have any big ticket failures. Track replacement can be $10k+, diesel engines are expensive and pricey to repair. Lots to be concerned about so spend some money to make sure you're buying the right machine. Both of my machines are still worth at least or more than I paid for them. Good luck with your decision!

Track replacement can be $10k+, !

Maybe on big equipment but a mini X isn’t even close to that bad. You can buy aftermarket tracks for $700-800 a piece and drive sprockets for $200-300. The rollers don’t wears as bad but they’re not that expensive.

I would've saved a fair amount of money if buying one long before I finally did. Thanks to GovPlanet I bought three for under 25K, and the total hours on them combined were less than 700. Yes, they all needed a few little things fixed, but nothing serious.
Okay, they're Case 580 Ds, but attached to military Unimogs known as FLU 419s, or SEEs. Unfortunately, those cheap buying days are over as of about three years ago.

Eventually I sold one, and now one has the standard 24" bucket and the other one got a 12" bucket installed. Yes, the Kubota BX25 also has a 12" bucket, but I really only use that one when there's no real digging to be done.

Moral of the story: Do buy, don't rent, unless money isn't a concern.

(PS. I joined to whine about the L3800's poor remotes, but am still a bit too miffed to bring that subject up.)

Get an excavator. Based on the amount of work you’re planning- and you will find more to do if you own it. IMO I would buy a low hour used machine (under 1,000) . The more hours it has (especially getting over 2,000j the more it has depreciated as far as the wear parts like the undercarriage and tracks. That is what I did, a CAT 305 excavator in the 5 ton category with 200 hours. I think I can sell it for about what I paid for it a year and half ago so it hasn’t cost me much. We use it to clear field edges and remove trees and stumps, install and fix drainage in fields and roads on our property, and I have an auger attachment I use for fence posts and pole barn posts (up to 4 deep). I started out by renting a large 15 ton excavator to remove the really big stumps (like 30” diameter oak and maple from a timber harvest) and also removed some boulders from fields the size of a VW Beatle. The mini excavator is nice because it can be hauled to other sites, and it is not so heavy that it tears up the ground when you move it around the property (unlike the 15 ton I rented did). A mini excavator has its limits especially with large stumps or anything weighing over about 3500 lbs. But it digs holes really well.

The rubber tracks wear pretty fast. My mini had 1200 hours when I bought it and the track on one side had been replaced already and the other side is junk.
