I have purchased the valve and now have to buy fittings and hoses. In most of the diagrams that I have seen it shows that the 3rd function valve being installed after the loader valve. My plan was to remove the power beyond hose from the loader valve, install it into the 3rd function valve, and then run the hose out of the 3rd function valve to the PB of the loader valve. This would put the 3rd function valve in front of the loader valve. Can I do this? Is there a down side to installing it this way?

That is how it is supposed to go in, but you are imagining the flow backwards. The loader valve is first in the series. The power beyond port on the loader valve puts power out to the 3 point currently.

You want to do as you said, remove the current power beyond line at the loader valve, connect it to the OUTPUT side of your 3rd function valve, and run a new line from the INPUT side of your 3rd function valve to the power beyond port of the loader valve.

I was looking at the attached diagram.....I was suggesting putting the hose from the pump into the 3rd function valve....out of the 3rd function valve into the loader...which according to this diagram would put the 3rd function valve in front of the loader valve.

If you do it that way, it won't operate as a third function. As soon as you activate it, the loader and everything else would loose flow.

Having it after the loader valve, allows you to feather the loader control for curl and lift, while activating the switch and use remaining flow for the 3rd function. The 3rd function valve is on or off, no feathering to leave power for other things after it.

I'm not 100% sure of this, I'm not a hydraulics expert, but I think the relief for the hydraulic system is also built into the loader valve and for that reason the loader valve must come first after the pump. Everything else is powered by the power beyond port on the loader valve and is protected by the relief built into it. You could break stuff, expensive stuff. Stuff that wouldn't be covered under warranty due to how it got broke.

Stick with the instructions. Use the power beyond port of the loader valve to power the 3rd function valve. It is how it was designed to work. Sticking with the proper installation also protects you from unforeseen issues that could cost you.

On my L2900, when I installed my third valve, I had to plumb it to the lift function of my loader valve.

Why? Is there no Power Beyond outlet from your loader valve? (If there are four work ports for the cylinders, one inlet, and one outlet, it doesn't have PB, or it needs a PB "plug" to separate tank return from PB flow).
