Installing a rear main seal on a early 1960's John Deere 1010 Crawler

Hello, has anyone ever installed a rear main crankshaft seal in a 1010 gas engine crawler? The repair manual I have says to pull the oil seal plate off the block to install the new seal but I pulled the old seal and have not removed the plate yet and it looks like I could just tap the new seal in without pulling the plate. Does anyone know if that will cause any issues? Also, does anyone know how far to tap the seal in? Do you tap it in until it bottoms out or until the outside of the seal if flush with the outside of the mounting plate?
