Thanks I did check out the post on subsoiler that's why I bought it.
Your right the TBN members have great ideas- I was just wondering about the depth.
Can the subsoiler handle such a small depth?
I suppose it could if you watch watch it closely enough.
However, I've also installed a radio fence in a previous life. It might be easier to just get a potting shovel and scratch out the dirt enough to put in the wire and cover it. The wire won't migrate, and (when trained) pooch won't be digging it up, either.
That's exactly what I did --I had my son drive while I watch it go in.
1500' in a hour I can't beleve how easy the subsoiler went through all conditions - rocks small and large, roots all sizes..
I have to post some pictures I'll do that on the other thread on subsoiler pictures.
I built a "knife" especially for burying the wire. I would think that a subsoiler would be a lot more difficult, as it is designed to go deep into the soil. My knife will go down about 3-4 inches and stop... it won't go any deeper.
I'll take some pics of it tomorrow and post them... If you have a welder or access to one, you can build one in a couple of hours.
We put in just shy of 3800' of wire around our property. The invisible fence works great. But you have to be committed to training the dogs on it...
I used my subsoiler last year to install about 2500'. Took me longer to do the splices between rolls than it did to bury the wire. I told this to the lady that cut my hair and she was upset because her husband is in the landscaping business and he brought home the skidsteer with an actual wire puller on it and theirs took a lot longer to do than mine, made more of a mess, and they did less wire. I think mine took less than 2 hours to do and that included the splices between 500' rolls. I then took the roller and rolled the dirt back down. Week later you couldn't even see where I had done anything except for the little white flags.
As you can see, it hasn't been used for a while. If I ever have another big project for it, I'll add a coulter to it to cut the sod, as the roots have a tendency to ball up in front of and around the shank, and lift the knife out of the ground.
It took me probably 1 1/2 hours to build, all out of scrap metal I had laying around the shop. I had to buy the lift pins, so Iguess I've got about $5 in it
Very cool cable knife. Has the feeder too. Did you install a place to hold the reel. I wish I would have seen this ad before I installed my fence. I could have prevented a rental fee. Thanks for posting your ideas.
Here is a couple pics of the one that I made from a box-blade ripper. I only used it once...if I was going to use it more I would have made the conduit more permanent, but it worked flawlessly as is
