I used a gear puller to get the old one off; I presume the 'slot' in the impeller has to match up to the 'slot' on the crankshaft for the key to slid in properly? I'm using a mallet and a piece of 2 x4 but not really getting the impeller to move down the shaft - ideas are appreciated !!

Now what holds the impeller to the shaft? After you answer this question ... you can look for a burr or other obstruction to the bore. The shaft should be clean, smooth and bright. Same with the bore of the new impeller. That mallet is putting pressure on the other end of the shaft. Can it take the pressure or are you damaging something else.

When I replaced my impeller I put it in the oven at 200 degrees for about 45 minutes. It slipped right on.
