Does it damage a backhoe attachment to to operate the tractor with the pins not installed ( pins that keep the boom from creeping down and swinging from side to side)? I have an ongoing discussion with a neighbor who does not install them. I feel it causes undue stress and wear and if the boom pin is not installed when the tractor in shut off it causes pressure to leak by until the boom is resting on the ground. Am I right or wrong ( I could be right for the wrong reason I guess.) Thanks in advance.

No damage will be done, certainly the boom will leak down but sometimes I'm lazy and just put the boom on the ground instead of installing the pins anyway. The pins are there for mainly traveling. Just be sure to check your stabilizers before backing out of your garage as they leak down also.
Is it bad to let the boom drop while the tractor is sitting. Well, it can lead to the bucket rusting...but I wouldn't be at all concerned about the cylinder packings or controls.
Is it bad to operate the tractor with the BH not secured. Ahhh, this is more of a concern. If the boom is flopping around back and forth / up and down, it could wear the bushings and possibly aid in earlier stress cracks forming.
I wouldn't start a neighbor war over it. While not exactly up to hoyle, it isn't really that bad, IMO.

Yes, there is wear and tear on the pivot pins/bushings and to some extent on the cylinders. I used to be good about setting the pins for traveling or when I wasn't using the hoe.
No issue when the tractor is at rest though.
My new one has arms that come down and lock the hoe and can be done while you are in the seat. That makes it so easy.

When traveling on a side hill, the boom can be swung to the uphill side which changes the weight distribution of the machine and stabilizes it.
I can't do this if the locking pins are in place.
To me, the ability to stablize the machine by swinging the boom to one side and then extending it greatly overrides any concern about increased wear. Just one overturn will put a lot more wear on the machine (and me) than years of operating it without the locking pins.

I was wondering about the pin thing also. my hoe wont come up far enough to put the pins in. i was really worried about it. i guess i could rig up a chain or something if i had to trabel somewhere far!!
