Do get it straight with your carrier about what is and isn't covered.
I knew my homeowners insurance covered my tractor on my property.. but was unsure of if it was covered when i drove it down the road to my other pasture a couple miles down the road. I was told by nationwide.. that as long as it was not for hire.. and was only used to tend my propertie(s) that it was covered.

I was relieved to hear that, as i had started to worry about liability while on the road..and wondering if I needed extra coverage.

Soundguy, that's interesting. I received some different information from my insurer. I am just pointing out the how many different answers we all seem to be getting from our insurers.

My vehicle insurer told me that my trailer was covered, but not the equipment on the trailer. Once I left my property, my tractor was not insured, nor was it insured riding on the trailer. This is when I learned of in-land marine policies. Boat owners face the same dilemma, since transporting the boat is not covered on one policy, but is covered on the in-land marine policy. Therefore, the boat owner technically has two policies incorporated into one. One for the water and one for transporting it.

I ended up getting an in-land marine policy which covers everything including on and off property as long as I am not doing commercial work. I had to sit down with the owner of the insurance company to get this worked out since I did not want a commercial policy, which was big bucks!

My feedback from the following insurers:

State Farm Homeowners: Would cover tractor fire/theft on property but not negligence. Did not extend outside of property. Negligence example would be driving tractor into a pond or clipping a large tree branch and doing major damage. Operator error stuff...

Liberty Mutual Vehicle insurance: Covered my car, and equipment trailer, but not the contents of the trailer. Liability and replacement of car/trailer. They told me no way would they pay to replace or repair a 30K tractor. They didn't even know how to insure a tractor since it was not a boat or car or house.

State Farm in-land marine: Covers tractor for fire, theft, and negligence on or off property, on or off trailer as long is it not doing commercial work like excavating. Requred proof that I kept tractor in enclosed structure on my property. Had to send pictures of the tractor in the metal building.

I think most questions need to be beyond are we insured, but to what extent are we insured... What exactly is covered, and how much...

That's exactly what my situation is, my ranch is about 3.5m from my home, and would like to just drive there, instead of trailering up for just a short distance, and am a little apprehensive about leaving it there because it's surrounded by NTL forest, and at least where I am, not everone going there is exactly taking in the scenery. Thanks for the reply

Thanks Guys, its interesting, my agent just bought a a small 20h Kubota for his property, and doesn't know how to insure it himself, his been in the business 23yrs. He told me that he's trying to write a policy and then send it to the State Farm honchos for review, Ill ask him about the in-land marine policy, even though Im a former Army man myself. HA..HA

My agent says my home owners only covers tractors up to 25 hp. Anything over that and I have to take out a seperate policy.

in-land marine policies are written on boats not the US Marines.
