Insurance on Rental Equipment

This past week I looked into renting a 6 ton excavator. Before I started into this I contacted my insurance company and asked if there was any coverage for the rental under my home owners insurance. The answer was no but my agent suggested that rental companies do offer insurance coverage. This was not the case when I visited the rental agency. For those who rent construction equipment and do not run a contractors business how do you get the insurance coverage?

im not sure, but i know we went to our local commercial Deere dealer and it was solely up to our liability policy for the business to cover an excavator... then they wanted copies of our insruance and our auto insurance to make sure our trailers/etc were covered as well....

i went down the road to our normal rental shop, they charge the $21 coverage or whatever and was a done deal... I dont have the time to give out insurance copies to rent machines :/

Here in Arkansas, you used to be able to rent equipment as a homeowner. I had a full sized backhoe here 5 years ago and i pulled all my stumps, made a huge burn pile and a little dirt work, for reasonable money.....somewhere around $500, insurance, delivery, and had it for the weekend...........i just checked into it last year with the same rental company and some others, and a homeowner cant do that anymore.....the insurance cost was ridiculous. it was in the thousands for insurance if i wanted it.......I know what i want done and have the know how and abilities to do it, but at the cost of the insurance it takes all the fun and affordability out of it.........I had to settle for a contractor in my area, and had to watch and make sure that they got what i wanted done the way i wanted it.....and you get to deal with the attitudes also............Don

I thought it was only like that in CA... local yards here will only rent Post Hole diggers, large equipment and large chippers by showing a contractors license...

A neighbor needed a Bobcat for a project and it was no-go... another neighbor has an account with United Rentals and it was no problem... they said it is all about reducing liability exposure.
