My International 424 with the C-146 gasoline engine has begun to "pop" through the carb/intake. I have determined it to be the #3 cylinder. If I take the plug wire off, the tractor actually runs smoother. I have put a compression gauge on #3, and it reads the same (or close) to the other 3. Any ideas on the cause and fix?
thanks

Are you absolutely sure your plug wires are in the proper firing order ?

Otherwise I would suspect a valve problem. Does it sit outside ? My 2444/ c153 had the same problem when I got it. Water had gotten down the stack and rusted a couple of valves up. Had to do a bit of a valve job on it, also had 2 bent pushrods.

Check the timing to make sure that's ok. Otherwise I agree with Ben.

Also could be "cross-firing" ie #3 is getting spark from one of the other cylinders. Could happen inside the distributor cap or from wire to wire if the plug wires are routed in a bundle for all or part of the distance from distributor cap to plugs.

May only need a valve adjustment. Besure to check that also before getting to the point of removing the cylinderhead.

If your compression is OK and it is only the #3 cylinder, make sure you have copper wire plug wires and switch the #3 spark plug to the #1 cylinder (and vice versa) to see if your miss moves to #1. Most problems of your type on Farmalls/Internationals are due to too cold a plug or bad spark plug wires. Good luck and let us know. Bobg in VA

One other thing, If you are running Champions (probably D16s(?). Change to AC or Autolite plugs (386 Autolites). Makes a world of difference. BobG in VA

I agree with the others.. get new AL plugs, new metal core wires.. and a new istrib cap.. carbon tracks can cause spark jumps.

Check timing.

The compression check is a good sign.. if it has the same comp as the others.. then valve wear and ring wear is probably similar.

I might add some MMO to my gass if I thought the valves were a bit sticky..

Agree with the others, new cap, rotor, wires, and especially some quality plugs such as autolite. I have had problems also with champion plugs, new right from the box. Only use bosch, and autolite now.

Good point on the plug wires and such.

I have found that the only thing I have any luck with Champoin plugs in are small Briggs engines. They seem to do ok in them.
