Being a resident of New York I am very familiar with taxes. I read somewhere a few years ago that NY was the most heavily taxed state in the country. I don't have all the numbers right in front of me so here is a list as best I can remember:

-Combination of state and county sales tax: 7% in my county on basically everything but food. (There is an exemtion for farm related purchases such as tractors if you are a farmer)
-Vehicle registration for Chevy pickup: $75 every 2 years and if a vehicle is sold the new owner must again pay the sales tax on the book value.
-State Income tax: 4-6.85% with no personal exemtions according to http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/ind_inc.html
-Property tax varies by township but in my case I pay about $2500 per year combined property and school taxes on an assesed value of about $68000.

There are probably about a half a dozen other taxes that I forgot about as well. It should be noted however that since we elected a Republican governor (George Pataki) six years ago, our overall tax rates have actually been decreasing. In my case I am paying about $400-$500 less per year overall than I did under the Mario Cuomo regime. It is also interesting to note that across the country the areas that voted for Al Gore are also the highest taxed areas. When are people going to learn?

I was able to live in several areas getting to this point in my life and found that the government gets you one way or another. You have to watch every state as there are none that don't have a different way of getting that dollar! I do live in NY and have been seeing a turn towards lower taxes in some areas and yes it is a relief but don't know where they will get it from to replace the lost revenue.

Wish I only paid $75 for registration on my pickup! My registration notice arrived last week...$191. for a 95 Ram p/u. Cheaper than a few places though, I'm sure. Kansas charges a luxery tax on vehicles, Oklahoma had a furniture tax until a few years ago, Georgia charged a use tax (if I remember correctly) on vehicles. Each state is innovative on ways to get into your pocket.

Scruffy,
You and I get nailed from a couple sides. First we have registration on our trucks. Then, we have weight fees. Calif also consider pickups as a commercial vehicle.

My '89 F250 license is mostly weight fee; about $150 a year. The other $75 is license, tax, use ect.

You know, you can register your truck as a car, and drop your registration significantly. But, you can not haul ANYTHING! You can't even haul groceries in back without facing a ticket. Nice, huh!

We have a luxury tax on auto's over $50k.

Oh, and someone else mentioned tax's on the sale of a used vehicle; we have that too in Calif. That's in addition to smog fees...

RobertN,
Yes Sir I do know that! Just can't figure out why I would want a pickup that I can't use! I know a lot of these city folk have them as 'macho' status symbols, and they do like going that way. Being an ol' country boy, if that turkey can haul a cord of wood, it's gonna haul at least a cord and a half!! I don't believe in letting them rest on their laurels!
Yeah, sales tax is a pain. Oregon has none, gets along just fine, with a much lower income tax, property tax, vehicle license/registration fees, and darn near everything else tax.
So could we, but, the state is hungry for spending money, even though there is a huge surplus that should be returned to the populace via tax cuts, rebates, etc. Nope, they gotta keep it, raise taxes some more, and figure out which segment of society should reap the benefit from it.

wuff ... this topic made me come out of lurk mode ... 'cause you think you got it bad???? Well, this ole boy is a Canadian transplant who got moved from Alberta to Michigan and gets to pay taxes with NO representation at all! I get to pay all the taxes y'all do ... but can't vote in any election, have no rights whatsoever, can't even buy a gun ... 'cause I'm not a citizen yet. And what do my excessive taxes pay for ... well, apparently an INS that's over 18 months behind in their reviews (I'm supposed to be immediately eligible for a green card, being married to a little ole Texas gal an' all) ... which will delay my citizenship that much longer ... and I'm not even allowed to b*tch .. 'cause my name will pop up the next time I re-enter the US from a business trip and some nutcase will say ... "hmm, don't like us, eh boy?" and not let me back in.
Talk about taxation without representation!!!
Taxes here? Well, registration is based on the purchase price so I pay $28 every year on my old horse trailer that moves once every 2 years ... maybe (in Alberta, a trailer license was $5 (now $15) and it's good for the lifetime of the plate). My income tax - fed and state is well over 30%, my property tax amount to some $2400 annually for 8 acres (and no services); insurance and others are quite high.
But I always console myself with the knowledge that y'all in New England pay much more to support all your liberal politicians. Hey, maybe if I registered as a Democrat, the INS would speed things up as they do for minorities ... nah, I couldn't sink that low!

too bad that common sense ain't
