Diagonal bracing, board or cable, is designed to transfer the hanging load back to hinge stile of a door or gate to prevent sagging. The cable is in tension supporting the hanging load from the bottom and the board brace is in compression supporting the hanging load from the top...so yes they should be opposite of each other.
