Welding bench tops need not be solid, and you could frame it up leaving a 1/2" gap in the center for attaching clamps using T-slot fittings or other methods of your choice.
That will allow you to exert force in places other than near the table edges.
Many fabricators spend serious money on Acorn tables (look 'em up, and contemplate the attachments too) instead of plain tops.
