Changed the oil and filter in my tractor the other day. After a couple of hours of bushhogging, noticed that I had an unusual amount of blowby coming out the vent tube. Only have 400 hours on tractor. A diesel mechanic friend of mine advised me to change the oil filter again. I put a new oil filter on today and no blowby. Used New Holland oil and filter. This was news to me and maybe it will help someone else - Lewis

Did your friend explain the logic behind such an idea?

Depends if the first filter was wrong or some filters, if mounted horizontally have a antisiphon or check valve to help oil pressure on starting. Some filters have a bypass valve in case filter gets plugged or clogged. I have seen this with automotive filters, but should apply to diesels as well. plowking

They were the same filters. It is mounted horizontally and his reasoning was much like plowking explained

I read the initial post three times and I feel that there may have been moisture in the new oil(first change) or the equipment used to add the oil to the engine had moisture/condesation in/on it. I have seen new 55 gallon drums of oil with moisture at the bottom of the barrel right from the oil company. When this moisture gets heated up inside an engine, then the white vapor/blowby would look excessive. This would explain why the "second oil change" cured the complaint. One thing you can do, is to wiped your finger inside the blowby tube and see if it looks like a white milky, oily substance=moisture mixed with oil fumes. Sometimes, one can also look at the underneath side of the oil filler cap and see this white milky signs of moisture.
