No the shaft will still turn, driven by the front wheels, It is not powered from the engine thru the transmission, but it will still turn as the front wheels will turn the front axle, and thru the front differential will turn the propeller shaft as there are no "free wheel" hubs on a tractor as you might find on say a front 4wd truck.

The Mahindra is working just fine now. In the process of locating and fixing the problem the dealer replaced all the wiring harnesses, the switches, the dash, alternator and battery

In addition to the shaft being missing, the tractor had died on us before we could load it onto the trailer. We thought it had run out of fuel even though the gage showed 3/8 in the tank. After several tried to "bleed" the injectors, the tractor started and we were able to take it to the dealer.

When we got the tractor to the dealer the tech discovered that the fuel shut-off solenoid was not getting power.

The dealer put in a NEW front shaft and the 4WD works just fine now. They also discovered some "corroded" wiring that was becoming intermittent. They also repaired that.

The NH also works good now.
