They lock and pin to hold them up. I happened to be at an antique tractor show with a guy who has the 10K tandem axle version. One great thing about them is that it is perfect safe to load and unload the trailer without it being hooked up to a vehicle. He'd bought his used from a rental place and it came with surge brakes. He was talking of converting it to normal electric brakes, because he hauls varying loads in it, and wanted the sensitivity and adjustability of electric brakes...

This guy has a couple of Struck-type mini-dozers and had real hassles trying to haul them on regular trailers...

I have been looking into this for some time... because all trailers in Europe have air brakes, it would be easiest for us to lower and lift the bed with the air suspension...

With little modification it could be also used to pick up swap bodies or big utility cable rolls.

Here are a few additional pics. Pretty tight quarters where the tire fits, couldn't get a good shot of axle setup, it's just bolted between a couple sets of springs. The rollers look like large sealed bearings on a stub shaft.
