I don't know if this is true or not but a friend emailed it to me today.

Learning How to Work the System...
I was going to bed the other night when my neighbor called me and told me that I had left my shed light on. As I looked for myself, I saw that there were people in my shed taking things to their truck.
I quickly phoned the Miami-Dade County (Fla.) Sheriff's Department, but they told me, in Spanish, no less, that no one was in this area to help at this time, but they would send someone over as soon as they would be available. I had to translate his words just to understand that one. I then wondered if I am still living in America, or in some other country.
A bit miffed, I said OK, hung up, and waited just one minute. Then, with my trusty Spanish-English dictionary by my side, just in case, phoned the Sheriff's Department right back. I said: "Hello. I just called you a minute ago because there were people in my shed stealing from me. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I've shot every last one of them!"
Then magically within a very few moments there were half a dozen sheriff cars in my yard, an Armed Response Unit and a Police dog..... the works! Of course, they caught the burglars red-handed. One of the officers (one who spoke English, thank God, this is supposed to be America!!) came over to me and said in a gruff and very demeaning manner, "I thought you said that you'd shot them!" I replied with: I THOUGHT YOU SAID....THERE WAS NOBODY AVAILABLE, AMIGO!

If it is true, it wouldn't surprise me!

It may have been an honest remark from the Sheriffs department. All of the police are busy and we'll send someone over as soon as possible. It is possible.

But, I like the spunk of the victim. I hope it is a true story to emphasize the meaning of the word "busy". Busy doing what???

That's a good one!!! Up here in Vt. we have Town Constables. They make about $600.00 a year. Oh yeaand we have only one and he won't respond to certain calls against people who have threatened him. If you call the State Troopers it could take days to get them here for some problems.(I can understand that!!)
Like coming home and having 40 pigs on your torn up lawn and garden!!!! The owner's response is you can't get money out of someone who hasn't got any or shoot them you would be doing me a favor.
His sister baited some of them into a horse trailer and sold them./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
My response is dogs and a shotgun. The neighbor usually comes a running when he hears the combination. Haven't had ham for dinner yet but someday I may aim a little higher!!!!
Rural living!!! Ain't it great/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I think it's an internet legend. I received several variants of the same email last year after Pat Buchanan ran a campaign ad very similar to what your story described. Pat was (is) very anti-immigration (at least as the system is set up today).

Of course this doesn't mean that it isn't true. The common thread is the spanish speaking 911 operater and the "I thought this was America" theme.

I think I've seen that one before, also.

I live in the county, just outside of the city limits. Both county and city police departments tend to back up each other. If we call the police for anything from obnoxious leaf burning smoke to major accident with injuries, we get response usually within 2-3 minutes!

Having been a cop for a number of years, I think I probably first heard my first version of this story about 35 years ago./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

No offense at all Bird because I have the utmost respect for police officers but this happens in our county all the time. Our road is brand new and as such used for a shortcut between two major highways and as a place for everyone to race their cars, motorcycles etc. very fast. There have been six wrecks on this five mile stretch of road in the last two years and one fatality. Last year we had a guy with a Cuda that was extremely hopped up. He would drag race on the road all the time. We called the sheriff numerous times and they never bothered to show or showed up a couple hours later. Then we had motorcycles drag racing on the road and again no response from the sheriff dept. After one call I had an emergency and had to go to the hospital to see a patient. On my way there I see two sheriff patrol sitting in the middle of the road just talking to each other. This was about 20 minutes after my neighbor had just called them about the same guy in the Cuda.
My neighbor called them one night as she had someone stealing a saddle at about 3am out of her horse trailer by the road. They showed up at 7pm the next day to take a report. I guess after all the problems we've had with getting the sheriff dept. to do anything out here I kinda believed it was true.

Richard, that's what makes stories like this interesting and fun; the fact that it could be true and even may have been at some time./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif We live so far out in the boondocks that we know it'll be at least 30 minutes and probably an hour for a deputy to get out here, and 45 minutes to an hour and a half for an ambulance./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Bird, I hope you here it again 35 years from now/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Heres one you may enjoy.

The man was in prison. He knew all of his mail was being read. He received a letter from his wife asking "when do I plant the potatoes?" He replied "do not plant the potatoes, I have hidden some guns in the garden." Later his wife wrote back "some policeman came to the house and dug up all the garden, but they didn't find anything." He replied "Now, plant the potatoes".

Al, in the last three versions of that one I've gotten via e-mail, it was the "FBI" instead of "policemen" and a telephone wiretap instead of letters./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
